Nathan Aspinall left covering face in embarrassment moments after Euro Tour title win as host is forced to apologise

Nathan Aspinall was the toast of Leverkusen on Sunday night after clinching the 2025 European Darts Open title on the European Tour — but his moment of glory came with an unintended twist.

The 33-year-old from Stockport produced a gutsy performance to edge past Australia’s Damon Heta 8–6 in a closely fought final, securing the £30,000 winner’s prize and continuing a strong run of form that’s seen him reach the Premier League play-offs in recent weeks.

But during the live on-stage interview that followed the trophy presentation, ‘The Asp’ delivered a little more honesty than broadcasters bargained for.

"I've been through rubbish, but I'm getting back there. When things are not going your way, you have to keep fighting, digging and believing you can get back to your best. That is what I do. And the last few weeks have been pretty f------ good,” he said, before sheepishly covering his face in realisation of the slip.

Host Philip Brzezinski responded with a smile and a quick save: “Very nearly, Nathan. We apologise for the language." Even Heta, gracious in defeat, couldn’t help but laugh at the moment.

Aspinall composed himself and went on to reflect more measuredly on his recent journey, with the win being particularly satisfying following his heartbreaking semi-final loss in the Premier League play-offs just days earlier. "To bounce back after the defeat on Thursday night, to come here and win this tournament, shows where my game's at at the moment," he assessed with happiness. "Credit to Damon - I thought that final was absolutely fantastic, it was a great game of darts, nip and tuck."

Aspinall’s triumph in Leverkusen adds another European Tour title to his growing résumé and sends a clear signal ahead of the summer’s big events: the gritty, passionate Asp is firmly back among the elite.
