Peter Wright has undergone a remarkable physical transformation in recent months. The two-time world champion has lost around three stone (19 kilograms) and says he now feels “fantastic” both physically and mentally. However, the weight loss may be having an unintended consequence — his form on the oche appears to be suffering.
PDC commentator Dan Dawson recently revealed he spoke with Wright about his new lifestyle and the effect it’s having on his game.
“The old Peter Wright is one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen,” Dawson said. “I was talking to him yesterday and asked him about the weight loss — he reckons he’s shifted three stone."
"He says he’s done it by having just one meal a day," Dawson continued, before addressing the negative side effects in terms of Wright's darting career. "But he also admits he feels like he’s lost some of the power in his throw. Physically and mentally, though, he says he feels amazing — so much better."
Dawson also drew a comparison to Luke Humphries, who famously slimmed down and went on to dominate the sport.
“We’ve already seen what losing weight did for Luke Humphries. He became a far better player," notes Dawson. "Humphries admits that getting fitter was the main reason why he turned into a Euro Tour monster and then a dominant world champion. But Peter says he’s just lost a little bit of power, and the darts aren’t landing the way he wants.”
Wright’s recent results suggest he is still struggling to adapt to his new physique. ‘Snakebite’, an eight-time major winner, has now slipped to 16th in the world rankings. At last week’s Czech Darts Open, he suffered another tough defeat — losing 6-5 to Stephen Bunting in the third round. Wright had been leading 5-3 and even had a match dart at tops, but failed to capitalise and let the victory slip through his fingers.
It’s been a difficult season for the ever-colourful Scotsman, and the question remains whether, like Humphries, his weight loss will eventually translate into improved performances on the big stage.
