Peter Wright’s Euro Tour record survives - Niko Springer falls just short of added place in history with Hungarian Darts Trophy triumph

Niko Springer won the 2025 Hungarian Darts Trophy last weekend. The 25-year-old German defeated Danny Noppert 8-7 in the final. For Springer, it was the first PDC ranking title of his career.

Springer began the tournament strongly with a 6-3 win against Gian van Veen. In the second round, he knew no mercy to Australian number one Damon Heta who was handed a 6-1 defeat. Also in the third round, Springer won relatively easily 6-3 against former world champion Rob Cross.

In the quarterfinals, world number one Luke Humphries also bit the dust. Springer won that match 6-4. In the semifinals, Springer and Josh Rock dished up a particularly exciting match to the Budapest audience. In the end, it was Springer who won 7-6.

Even in the final, Springer did not get it for free. Against Noppert he had to go to extremes to eventually win 8-7. Thanks to this performance Springer climbed to 66th place in the world rankings. He is now seventh on the European Order of Merit and is therefore already assured of a place at the European Championship later this year.

Top 3 most played legs on the European Tour

Striking fact: Springer played 63 legs at the Hungarian Darts Trophy this weekend. Only two players ever played more legs at a European Tour tournament. Those are Peter Wright (66 legs at the German Darts Championship 2024, where he beat Luke Littler 8-5 in the final) and Max Hopp (65 legs at the German Darts Open 2018, where he won 8-7 over Michael Smith in the final).

The European Tour continues next weekend in Basel, where the Swiss Darts Trophy is on the program. Just under a month later the final round is on the program, when the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim will be fought for the overall win.
