The third round of the European Darts Open gets underway this afternoon in Leverkusen as the Quarter-Finals get set this afternoon.
Leverkusen hosts the eighth Euro Tour tournament of the season this weekend. It is also the eighth time the European Darts Open has been played. The first edition took place in 2016 in Düsseldorf and was won by Michael van Gerwen, who settled with Peter Wright (6-5) in the final. A year later, the European Darts Open moved to Leverkusen. Then it was Wright who got to lift the cup. Snakebite triumphed in the final 6-2 against Mervyn King.
After not taking place in 2020 and 2021 due to the corona pandemic, the tournament has been on the Euro Tour calendar annually again since 2022. Van Gerwen, who will not be there this year due to private circumstances, still remains the record holder with four overall wins. Last year, the overall victory went to Dave Chisnall, who edged his compatriot Ross Smith 8-6 in the final.

James Wade v Matt Campbell
The afternoon session in Leverkusen will be kicked off by James Wade and Matt Campbell. Wade made short work of Lukas Wenig in the previous round and did not even allow the German a single leg. For a place in the quarter-finals, 'The Machine' has to get past Matt Campbell. The Canadian provided a stunt work yesterday by sending home Ross Smith, last year's finalist and this year's eleventh series leader.
Damon Heta v Andreas Harrysson
Third-seeded Damon Heta, who won easily over the always treacherous Mickey Mansell in the previous round, takes on Andreas Harrysson this afternoon. Heta obviously starts as the favorite, but will not underestimate 'Dirty Harry' after all. Harrysson defeated former world champion Michael Smith 6-1 in the previous round with an average of 106. It remains to be seen whether Harrysson can be a stunner against Heta.
Cameron Menzies v Ritchie Edhouse
Last year's winner is also already home and Cameron Menzies is responsible for that. After all, 'Cammy' defeated Dave Chisnall in the previous round with the smallest difference. For a place in the quarter-finals, he takes on Ritchie Edhouse this afternoon, who himself defeated tenth-seeded Danny Noppert 6-2 in the previous round. Edhouse is struggling to confirm his title from last year at the European Championship, but gets a great opportunity this weekend to get far again at a ranking tournament.
Jonny Clayton v Mike De Decker
Jonny Clayton against Mike De Decker promises to provide fireworks. Both men are known for their high scoring ability and keep a nice pace. The second-seeded Welshman won the Dutch Darts Championship last week and was too strong for Jermaine Wattimena in the previous round, 6-4. Decker, on the other hand, helped by a 100+ average, won 6-3 over Englishman Ryan Joyce.
Nathan Aspinall v Ricardo Pietreczko
Nathan Aspinall suffered a disappointment last Thursday when he failed to qualify for the final of the playoffs in Premier League Darts. 'The Asp' is therefore looking to get back to winning ways this weekend, defeating Bradley Brooks 6-4 in his opening match Bradley Brooks. Aspinall does need to get past home favorite Ricardo Pietreczko, who himself was too strong for Martin Schindler 6-4 in the previous round for a place in the quarter-finals.
Chris Dobey v Andrew Gilding
Chris Dobey defeated last week's finalist Niko Springer 6-5 in the previous round. 'Hollywood' now meets Andrew Gilding, who in turn was responsible for the elimination of thirteenth-seeded Ryan Searle by the narrowest of margins. Dobey starts this match as the clear favorite, but Gilding looks to regain his good form after a difficult start to 2025.
Peter Wright v Wessel Nijman
In the penultimate match of the afternoon session, the last remaining Dutchman in the tournament will be in action with Wessel Nijman. Nijman, good for stunt work against Gary Anderson in the previous round, will take on Peter Wright in the third round. 'Snakebite' has been blowing hot and cold in recent weeks and was too strong for Darryl Pilgrim in his opening match, 6-5.
Stephen Bunting v Daryl Gurney
Rounding out the afternoon session are Stephen Bunting and Daryl Gurney. Bunting is seeded first this weekend and in his opening match, helped by a 100+ average, defeated compatriot Luke Woodhouse 6-3. 'The Bullet' may have more trouble with Gurney, who sent Gian van Veen home in the previous round with phenomenal play (107.20 average).
The tournament will be broadcast by PDC TV. As usual with Euro Tour tournaments, the European Darts Open consists of three tournament days. The afternoon sessions start daily at 12 p.m., while the evening sessions start at 6 p.m.
The first round will take place on Friday. The 16 Pro Tour players are then paired with one of the 16 players who managed to get through the various qualifying tournaments. The top-16 seeded players enter the tournament on Saturday in the second round. The conclusion of the tournament follows on Sunday, with the third round first in the afternoon session. Sunday night the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will follow.
All participants starting from the first round are guaranteed £1250 in prize money, while the top-16 enter from the second round and receive £2,500 anyway. This amount eventually rises to the top prize of £30,000 for the winner. An important detail is that players who are automatically seeded via the Order of Merit and lose their first match will not receive any prize money on the various rankings. This does apply to qualifiers who are later designated as seeded by the withdrawal of others.
