In a recent episode of Darts Draait Door, the Sportnieuws.nl podcast dedicated to all things darts, a hilarious anecdote involving the legendary Bobby George took centre stage—prompting Vincent van der Voort to chime in with some fond memories of the iconic showman.
Now 79 years old, George once tried to get in touch with Van der Voort but couldn’t find his number in his phone. As George explained in a podcast audio clip, “I was looking for Michael van Gerwen’s number, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Later, I bumped into him at a Modus event. He said, ‘Weren’t you going to call me?’ I told him I couldn’t find his name in my contacts. Turns out he’d saved it under ‘B’—for ‘Best player in the world!’” George roared with laughter as the story played out.
Van der Voort couldn't help but laugh as the clip ended. “That’s so typical of Michael,” he chuckled. Fellow guest Vlottes also enjoyed the moment: “And he didn’t even say anything to Bobby. So Bobby’s there scrolling through the M’s, trying to find him and—nothing.”
Van der Voort then shared another memory involving himself, Van Gerwen, and George. “We used to do a lot of exhibition events with Bobby,” he recalled. “We’d always wind him up a bit. I once joked, ‘Are you incontinent yet?’ And he’d fire back, saying we only speak English thanks to him. That kind of banter would just go back and forth.”
But the standout memory came from their car journeys together. “We’d often be driving to events, the three of us. Michael and I would sit in the back, Bobby in the front, and someone else would be behind the wheel,” Van der Voort said. “We’d chat away in Dutch—talking about football, TV shows like VI, whatever. And every so often, we’d just slip in ‘Bobby’ mid-sentence. Every minute or so, just ‘Bobby.’ And he’d think we were talking about him.”
Laughing, Van der Voort added: “He’d go nuts. We’d say something totally normal, then suddenly, ‘Bobby.’ He’d start grumbling to the driver, ‘They’re talking about me. I know it. They’re definitely talking about me.’”
