Christopher Kempf, the PDC’s resident stats and data guru, has shared some intriguing new insights into the scoring power of today’s top players. The data reveals which players rack up the most points in the opening stages of a leg.
In standard play, every leg begins on 501. Kempf’s analysis focuses on which players, on average, leave themselves the lowest score after nine darts - a key indicator of scoring consistency and power.
Unsurprisingly, it’s the current world champion Luke Littler who tops the list. ‘The Nuke’ is left with just 164 after nine darts on average, making him the only player who, theoretically, could throw a 12-darter in every leg. Littler hits at least one treble nearly every turn and rarely lets a visit go by without one. He currently sits second in the PDC Order of Merit however, still a respectable distance behind world number one Luke Humphries.
Just behind Littler in second place is Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock. The 23-year-old has been in impressive form, averaging 172 after nine darts. Rock typically has just over one visit per leg without a treble, yet his relentless consistency has seen him climb to 14th in the world rankings.
Third on the list is none other than Gary Anderson. ‘The Flying Scotsman’ averages 176 after nine darts and, like Rock, registers slightly more than one visit per leg without a treble. Now 54, Anderson continues to show he’s still a force on the circuit, currently holding 15th spot in the world.
Just outside the top three, and flying the Dutch flag, is Dirk van Duijvenbode in fourth. ‘Aubergenius’ has endured a tough spell with injury but appears to be gradually rediscovering his best form. Van Duijvenbode averages 179 after nine darts, also registering just over one visit per leg without a treble. Despite recent setbacks, he currently holds the 31st spot in the PDC rankings.
This fresh look at scoring statistics offers a fascinating glimpse into the elite level of consistency required to compete at the top - and just how fine the margins are between the game’s best scorers.
