'Will it be those two performing next year for Scotland?' - End of an era for Peter Wright & Gary Anderson at 2025 World Cup of Darts says former World No. 1

Darts legend Colin Lloyd has openly questioned whether we will ever see Gary Anderson and Peter Wright in action together again on behalf of Scotland at the World Cup of Darts.

The pair, who took the title together in 2019, were painfully eliminated in Frankfurt this year. In the last 16, Anderson and Wright were ransacked 8-0 by the Dutch duo of Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert.

The four-time world champions - twice each - managed only three darts at double during the entire match and ended with a disappointing team average of 79.37. This was offset by an impressive performance by the Dutch: Van Veen and Noppert recorded an average of over 100 and needed less than 13 minutes to win the first seven legs.

Former world number one Lloyd doubts whether or not it is now time for a new generation of Scottish darters. “Will it be those two performing next year for Scotland? Who knows," Lloyd says. “Cameron Menzies is blasting up the rankings, so we might have a different pairing next year for Scotland.”

The two-time major winner was very disappointed by the display of Wright and Anderson last weekend in Frankfurt. “It was a sloppy performance. They averaged 78 between them as a team.It was very unlike Gary Anderson and Peter Wright. I will defend them on that front," Lloyd analyses. “But let’s not take away the level of performance the Dutch put in averaging 100 as a pair. They had plenty of opportunities and they took them all."

“You would not expect Gary Anderson and Peter Wright to put in a performance like that," he continues. "Listen they would have been disappointed. It is a funny old game pairs. Sometimes you don’t feel like you get the flow or rhythm going. And it very much looked like that for those two guys."

Lloyd concludes with a striking statement about the course of the match: “If they were going to get beat by Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert I would not have expected it to be 8-0. That was a shock. Not that the Dutch beat the Scottish team but in the fashion that they did.”
