Peter Wright has always been a crowd hero in Germany with the multiple time World Champion searching for something to make them cheer at the European Darts Open in Leverkusen.
Speaking to DartsNews.com exclusively after his win over Darryl Pilgrim, he came back from 5-3 down and survived multiple match darts in the decider before getting emotional in the process.
"It was just hard work. The first half of the match I missed one dart at double, one dart at bullseye. There's three legs I could've potentially won. I'm going here we go again and Darryl kicks off 180. Happy with the win and just the crowd got me through the game. Didn't want to let them down, the way they were supporting me it was brilliant," said Wright to DartsNews.com.
He lamented how he played especially given that support as he said he just wants to give them something to cheer about which he can't right now as he assessed his form as good but something which he can't get a hold of.
"It's great to get the support but I just wish I could take their vibe and play how they want me to. It's very difficult. I wanted to play a lot better. I felt good in the practice room but it didn't quite work up there. I scraped through it was a win."
Next up is Wessel Nijman. He said that he didn't feel well last time they played so he is very much up for revenge and facing the Dutchman instead of Gary Anderson will give him extra fuel.
"I got a revenge match after last week. Last week I didn't turn up, I didn't feel well at all. But I'll be ready for him."
A certain Anderson he will play with in just over a week at the World Cup of Darts. He said that his goal is three tournaments in particular and peaking again for those.
One for bullish statements usually, Wright gives more of a tone of a player knowing that he is searching as opposed to being near the finished article.
"Practice feels good. I'm getting ready for the Matchplay, World Championship and obviously for the World Cup of Darts. Me and Gaz. I just want it to show up there."
