The ‘90s were an excellent era for sitcoms. Not all of them have stood the test of time, though. From a non-nostalgic perspective, which of these sitcoms “hold up”? On that front, we aren’t talking solely, or even mostly, about the appropriateness of the comedy. Were there jokes in successful ‘90s sitcoms that some would take issue with now? Of course, and that’s also true of current successful sitcoms, because that’s the nature of the comedic landscape.
For a sitcom to be considered here, well, it has to be a ‘90s sitcom, for starters, so nothing that ran mostly in the ‘80s and then had, like, half a season in 1990, or the inverse of that where a show debuted in the fall of 1999 but is a 2000s show. They had to be, in some way, successful at the time. Yeah, “Homeboys in Outer Space” is bad, but it was considered bad when it aired in 1996. The sitcoms that don’t hold up from the ‘90s are ones that were popular at the time but, frankly, just weren’t very good (“Step by Step”) or are just so incredibly ‘90s as to feel so dated you almost need a reference guide to watch them (“Murphy Brown”). Here are the ones that still are worth a watch, though.
