17 bands we'd like to see reunite in 2017

2017 is shaping up to be a fascinating year for the history books as well as in pop culture and that's not just because there will be a new Star Wars near the end of it. Bands seem to be reuniting all the time now, but there are still plenty of bands that haven't taken the opportunity. Here are 17 bands that the new year should inspire to get back together.

That SNL appearance was incredible. They're saying they're done, and we all are going to keep missing Phife Dawg, but c'mon. Make 2017 a little more bearable, Tribe. Please.

R.E.M.

R.E.M. broke up in 2011, and all seem to be happy with their lives, and they certainly don't need the money, but if we've learned anything from Dinosaur Jr getting back together a few years ago, it's clear that R.E.M. might also be re-energized after some time apart. Let's find out!

Quit messing around, Jack White. We need you and Meg to get in front of a Marshall stack and behind the skins and make another classic.

Talking Heads

If America is going to turn into a crude approximation of 1970s New York City, then we might as well have Talking Heads making new music again.

Husker Du

Bob Mould has arguably made his best music since disbanding Husker Du, but after The Replacements reunited, anything's possible. It's time for a new generation to say, incredulously, "We're Husker Du, who are you?"

Fugazi

Ian McKaye's long said he won't get the band back together, but we really think he should think about it. Having a 28th anniversary commemorative tour would be weird, but if there's an album that deserves it, it's "13 Songs."

OK, yes, they just re-united, but it's been five years since the original lineup reunited. Anyone who saw them do "One Armed Scissor" on Letterman and sat mouth agape knows this to be true.

Justin Timberlake's career is fine, but his former bandmates would certainly be down. Justin's nearing 20th reunion age though, and wouldn't it be nice to head into that after selling out years worth of a worldwide tours and some "Bye, Bye, Bye"-type bangers?

Sonic Youth

It's been over five years since Sonic Youth disbanded following the dissolution of Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's marriage. It'd be really awesome if those two could amicably put aside their differences and get back on stage again. They'll never make another "Daydream Nation" but they could do one hell of a victory lap by hitting the festival circuit.

Rilo Kiley

Rilo Kiley only broke up officially in 2014, but went on hiatus years before, with several members making extremely cryptic comments to the press that pointed at some very ugly fighting going on within the band. That's too band because Rilo Kiley wrote a lot of really fun pop rock songs and we're sure it'd make a lot of 30-something indie fans smile if they all took the stage together again.

Dev Hynes is such an interesting artist. He's seemingly transformed into his final form as Blood Orange, but what if he brought his newfound sensibilities to the utter weirdness that was Test Icicles? That'd be freakin' cool.

LCD Soundsystem

There's a new movie about "Death by Audio," the legendary Brooklyn club out, which means people who never saw LCD Soundsystem are going to get bummed they can't. They technically re-united in 2016, with a string of tour dates, but promised but did not deliver a new album. Finish your subway symphony, James Murphy, but get back to what you're meant to be doing.

The Postal Service

After briefly coming together and releasing some new music in the form of a reissue of their first album "Let Go," the Postal Service officially disbanded in 2013 after a string of festival appearances. 2017 should be the year they go for it and record a complete second album. Everyone will be about 15 years older with 15 more years of heartbreak and triumph to add to the songwriting. Who says no?

Rage Against The Machine

RATM reunited in 2007 during a time of political upheaval in the U.S. where at least an election was quickly approaching. 2016 is much worse with people on both sides of the aisle left feeling betrayed and disappointed in their leaders. The messages of Rage's songs have never been more relevant. Sure, several members of the band are involved in a supergroup with members of Public Enemy, but times like these call for the real thing.

The Smiths

The Smiths will probably never reunite, but fans can hope. They've recently announced that they're putting out a new 7" single with two never-before-heard tracks. However, Johnny Marr and Morrissey haven't gotten along in about 30 years, and now Brexit may make their reunion an even larger pipedream: they are ideologically split on the issue. However, with the pound losing value after the people voted Leave, perhaps rumors of huge festival paydays with all-vegetarian food options will finally entice the band to get back together.

Billy Corgan kicked original bassist D'arcy Wretsky out in 1999, and it wasn't until last year that the two started speaking again. After original guitarist James Iha came back into the fold a couple years ago, it seemed like a matter of time before D'arcy was back, too. We're close, but 2017 should be the year that puts Billy, James, D'arcy and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin back together again.

Roxy Music

Brian Eno has repeatedly said in interviews that he doesn't look back and that the other members of Roxy Music understand that, hence, no tour. However, in 2015, guitarist Phil Manzanera said nothing was off the table and that the band even had an album's worth of unreleased material. A worldwide tour would be huge.

David Matthews writes and tweets from Brooklyn.
