20 extremely awkward red carpet moments

There was probably nothing more awkward for Zac Efron than the moment he dropped a condom on the red carpet of his movie, The Lorax. It was a quick moment; however, it captured the attention of many. He addressed it during an interview with Matt Lauer on Today, saying that moment was promoting safe sexual practices.

Britney and Justin definitely captivated viewers with their all-denim look at the AMAs. Although it wasn't many people's favorite, Timberlake stood by his choice in 2020. "I don't know, man, you could kinda rock that today," he said on The Daily Podcast. "Look, man, you do a lot of things when you're young and in love, man. That's what you do."

Jerry Seinfeld was visibly uncomfortable during a 2017 red-carpet interview when singer Kesha caught him off guard before asking him for a hug. "I'm Kesha; I love you so much," she said while stretching out her arms to go in for a hug. "No, thanks," he replied while stepping backward.  

While posing on the red carpet at the premiere of Olivia Rodrigo's Guts film, the singer spotted a photographer who she said was "rude" to her in the past. "You were so disrespectful to me at the Grammys," she said. "You yelled at me at the Grammy party. At the Universal after-party. I remember." She went on to tell the photographer to apologize to her. "Yep, you do. No, no, no. You need to apologize."

This moment between Kelly Rowland took off on social media after fans saw the Destiny Child alum having a tense conversation with a red carpet attendant. Fans quickly jumped to the singer's defense after seeing the clip online. “The woman knows what happened [and] I know what happened," Rowland said in an interview. "I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries, and that is it."

During a tense red carpet moment in 2017, Mexican soap actor Eduardo Yáñez assaulted a journalist who asked him questions about his strained relationship with his son. Later, the reporter filed a lawsuit against the actor, claiming he had shown zero remorse over the incident.

Migos and Joe Budden's beef on the red carpet of the BET Awards had everybody talking. After an awkward interview with the band, Budden got noticeably irritated before throwing his microphone and walking out of frame. The group followed suit, dropping their mics and standing up before crossing their arms. "What you [trying] to do?" one of the rappers asked Budden before the group's entourage broke the moment up.

During an Oscars after-party, actor and comedian Tiffany Haddish had an awkward interaction with one of the red-carpet interviewers. After they called Haddish's dress a "costume change," the performer replied that she wasn't "wearing a costume." 

"I'm wearing Dolce & Gabbana," she added. "It's called an evening gown, darling. No one is paying me for this. I paid for it — it's custom. Thank you."

While attending the 2015 Grammys, Taylor Swift shut down a reporter who assumed she'd be ending the night at home with "lots of men." She replied gracefully, saying she planned to end the night with "my friends" and "cats."  

Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui made a small moment on the red carpet extremely awkward after begging one of her bandmates to switch her places in a picture so she could be on her good side. After stressing for a few seconds, the singer ran to the other side of the group in the middle of cameras flashing, making this moment one that'll always give us second-hand embarrassment. 

During a red carpet interview with Access Hollywood, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Sutton Stracke made her thoughts on Lisa Rinna's potential return to the series clear. When asked if the latter should come back to hold a diamond, the reality star stayed completely silent.

At the launch of her fragrance, animal rights activists threw a bag of flour at the reality star and trashed her for wearing fur. Years later, the clout-chasing reality star revealed it was all manufactured to create a moment. (That makes it even more awkward, in our opinion!)

For those who may be unfamiliar, the night Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech during the 2009 VMAs, he was walking the red carpet, drinking a bottle of Hennessy before entering the venue. 

With that info, his stunt during the pop singer's big moment makes a little more sense. 

On the red carpet at the 2018 Grammys, the musician had a painful conversation with Giuliana Rancic before the event. "How are you feeling?" Giuliana asked him. "I'm feeling normal," they said before smirking. Awkward!

We can't forget to mention Debby Ryan's awkward moment with a reporter during a Vogue event. Throughout the minute-long interview, the Disney star had a few moments that have now gone viral on social media. The most embarrassing part for Debby, though, has to be the moment she stares down the reporter, telling her she wanted "to make history."

Fresh Prince actor Will Smith made headlines after slapping Chris Rock in 2022; however, that's not the first time the actor has touched somebody. In 2012, the actor slapped someone on the red carpet who tried to kiss him during an interview. "What's your problem, buddy?" he asked.

Angelina Jolie's first time being nominated at the Oscars was clouded by negative attention. On the red carpet, the actress celebrated her big day by planting a kiss on her guest, who happened to be her brother. "First, we're the best of friends. And it wasn't some odd open-mouthed kiss. It was disappointing that something so beautiful and pure could be turned into a circus," she told People.

Scarlett Johansson was clearly irritated with Ryan Seacrest during an interview with the talk show host in 2017. After asking her if she rehearsed with the shoes she was going to wear, the Ghost World actor told the American Idol OG that it was a "ridiculous question." We don't blame her!

While promoting the Barbie movie, Ryan Gosling whispered something to his co-star, Simu Liu, who had his arm draped around Gosling's back while posing for pictures. "Oh, is that too tender for you?" Liu asked him. "A little bit," Gosling replied. Whew. Talk about embarrassing!

During a 2015 event, Amy Schumer was so star-struck by Kim Kardashian and Kanye Wes that she decided to pretend to face-plant in front of them to get their attention. The awkward part for Schumer, though? The Hollywood couple stepped over without giving her a second thought.
