Maple Leafs Top Prospect Shatters Expectations at World Junior Showcase

The World Junior Summer Showcase is in full swing, and Maple Leafs top prospect Ben Danford is shattering expectations, truly proving how good of a player he can be. The Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive prospect, Ben Danford, is among the 44 players who were invited to Hockey Canada's World Juniors Summer Showcase. Hockey Canada finally unveiled the 44 prospects who will head to Minnesota for the showcase, after they held the roster release back while the organization dealt with several injuries, which begins Sunday and runs through August 2 in Minneapolis. Defensive prospect Ben Danford is the only Maple Leafs player invited to the annual showcase, where Canada's World Junior staff will get their first look at what their team might look like for the 2026 World Juniors, which will also take place in Minnesota in December. Danford is being called the best player at the World Juniors Summer Showcase Danford has been exceeding expectations, and one source revealed that he has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase so far. The source said Danford is steady, smart, and hard to ignore on the ice. 'Ben Danford has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase he's steady, smart, and impossible to ignore. Makes every shift count, whether he's breaking up plays or starting the rush. Canada's blue line is in good hands.' - An unnamed source The Maple Leafs selected Danford with their first pick (31st overall) at the 2024 NHL Draft. During his visit to Toronto's development camp earlier this month, the defender revealed that he's receiving mentorship from current Leafs defensemen as well as some alumni like Mark Giordano. The 6-foot-2 Danford could make for an excellent fit for Canada should he make the team. He is responsible in his own end, and he demonstrated leadership capabilities when he was named captain of the Oshawa Generals ahead of the 2024-25 OHL season.

Vikings UDFA making serious push to not just make the roster, but earn serious playing time after impressive start to training camp

When it comes to the Minnesota Vikings, their biggest issue is currently at cornerback. Right now, Byron Murphy Jr. is the top guy and that's not going to change. He has earned not only the money that comes with being CB1, but his play has earned him the role. Isaiah Rodgers is slotted in as CB2 and Jeff Okudah right now is the CB3 when the Vikings play in nickel packages. After those three, Mekhi Blackmon is the most likely CB4, but one player's performance over the last two days has made a major impact and could make that decision a little bit harder. Dwight McGlothern is standing out in training camp When the Vikings added Dwight McGlothern as an undrafted free agent after the 2024 NFL Draft, he was one of two players they signed who was a top 200 player on Arif Hasan's consensus board. The former Arkansas Razorback had transferred from LSU and showed flashes at both schools. One of the biggest reasons why he was undrafted was due to his size and issues with concussions. He profiled like an intriguing option at outside cornerback, especially with his height and solid linear movement skills. There were some limitations to his game, including the explosive metrics coming in very subpar, but there is a lot to like. Despite being on the active roster all of last season, he didn't play very much, but thrived against the Chicago Bears the first time he got extensive run. Going into training camp, McGlothern was going have a lot of opportunities to earn an improved spot on the roster, including possibly getting into the rotation. The last two training camp practices, McGlothern has made his presence known by getting interceptions on back-to-back days, including this beauty from Tuesday. The best way for a player like McGlothern to make the roster is to make plays to earn opportunities in better spots. Well, McGlothern has done just that, and if he continues to make waves, could find himself in a great spot come September.

Young Seattle Mariners Starter Causing Internal Battle Among Fans

If you scroll up-and-down Seattle Mariners related content on social media, you will undoubtedly see a bevy of different opinions on rookie third baseman Ben Williamson. Some see him as a gritty, glove-first third baseman who plays hard and does 'the little things.' Some see him as a guy with a 78 OPS+ who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag. Others want him as a starter for life, and don't see any need to bring in Eugenio Suarez or Willi Castro at the trade deadline. Others see him as not even a major league player. The answer, of course, lies somewhere in the middle, as I discussed on the latest edition of the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast: If you want to go upgrade to Geno, I would get it, and I would support it ultimately because I think it will make the offense better, and the offense might need to carry you. But this notion that Ben Williamson is no good or can't play or doesn't belong in the organization, that's not fair either. I think he absolutely provides something, and we can have a fair and balanced conversation. I can acknowledge that Ben Williamson is a good player without thinking he deserves 600 at-bats right now, and you can say he needs to improve at X, Y, or Z without saying he's not a major league player. He's been excellent defensively, he grinds out at bats. To me, he's generally a serviceable 9-hitter, I enjoy his approach to the game, I think he provides something to this team... A former second-round pick, Williamson is hitting .256 with just one home run and a .239 on-base percentage. However, he is near the top of the defensive charts at third base, and only Ke'Bryan Hayes has more defensive saved runs than he does. The Mariners will take on the Athletics on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. PT. Seattle is 57-50.

Packers Promising Playmaker Limps off Practice Field

Second-year Green Bay Packers running back Marshawn Lloyd can’t seem to catch a break. Chosen by the Packers with the No. 88 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Lloyd dealt with hamstring injuries throughout training camp last summer before suffering a season-ending ankle injury just one week into his rookie season. Marshawn Lloyd Knocked from Packers Practice As the intensity ratchets up at Packers training camp, Lloyd’s second season may have already gotten off on the wrong foot, during Green Bay’s first practice in full pads this summer. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Lloyd stayed out on the field but didn’t continue to practice, instead watching from behind the huddle without a helmet. Demovsky points out that Lloyd was slow to get up but then did not return to practice the rest of the day. The Packers are likely hoping for big things from Lloyd, who is likely to compete with Emmanuel Wilson for the lion’s share of carries behind Wilson. It remains to be seen how serious Lloyd’s injury is, but if the 24-year-old is forced to miss any significant time, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers may be wise to go shopping for some quality running back help in the days and weeks ahead.
