20 TV shows that went on way too long

At least you'll always have these 20 shows to watch on repeat.

'Arrested Development'

'Arrested Development'
Fox

The original run is comedy gold, but the Netflix reboot felt like an uncanny valley version of the Bluth family. The disjointed editing and green screens just made us sad for what used to be the smartest show on TV.

'Homeland'

'Homeland'
Showtime

The tension between Carrie and Brody was the heartbeat of the series. However, once that storyline resolved, the show kept going for years, but it felt like a different, less compelling spy thriller that we didn't sign up for.

'The Fairly OddParents'

'The Fairly OddParents'
Nickelodeon

Timmy, Cosmo, and Wanda were the perfect trio. But when they started adding talking dogs and neighbors to keep the plot moving, that's when we knew the magic was officially gone.

'Pretty Little Liars'

'Pretty Little Liars'
Warner Horizon Television

Gosh, what a mess. This ABC Family/Freeform series about a group of high-school girl friends trying to solve their friend's murder had us hooked in the beginning. However, after that finale stunt and the never-ending revolving door of potential suspects, the creators lost us for good.

'13 Reasons Why'

'13 Reasons Why'
Netflix

Season 1 of this series told a complete, devastating story that didn't need a sequel. Despite that, Netflix pushed out three more seasons that lost the plot and its trove of loyal fans.

'Riverdale'

'Riverdale'
Berlanti Productions

It began as a moody murder mystery and somehow ended with superpowers, time travel, and musical episodes. While we admire the audacity, we definitely lost the plot somewhere between the gargoyle king and the organ harvesting cult.

'The Office'

'The Office'
Deedle-Dee Productions, NBC

Sorry, but this one just never did it for us—no matter how many times we tried. And while we're at it, the Peacock spin-off, The Paper, wasn't much better.

'Scrubs'

'Scrubs'
NBC, ABC

Producers know that the dreadful "Med School" ninth season ruined everything that was perfect about this show. Perhaps fans will get their redemption when the show returns for a 10th season in February 2026, nearly 16 years after going off the air in 2010.

'SpongeBob SquarePants'

'SpongeBob SquarePants'
Paramount

Seasons 1-3 are cinematic masterpieces that raised us millennial and Gen-Z fans. Everything after that, however, feels like a chaotic fever dream that lost the wit and heart of the original Bikini Bottom we knew and loved.

10 of 20

'Dexter'

'Dexter'
Showtime

The first four seasons were perfection, but then things got extremely messy. We pretend the last few years didn't happen just to preserve the memory of our favorite serial killer.

11 of 20

'Weeds'

'Weeds'
Showtime

A series about a suburban mom selling tree to locals? We were sold. But once the show turned into a cross-country cartel drama, we lost the quirky suburban charm that made us fall in love with it in the first place.

'How I Met Your Mother'

'How I Met Your Mother'
CBS

We spent nine years waiting to meet the mother, only to have the entire final season take place at a wedding that was undone in the finale’s last five minutes. Nothing has ever stung quite as much as that moment.

'Glee'

'Glee'
Fox

The music was catchy, and the drama was delicious, but once the original New Directions graduated, the show lost its anchor. It went from a fun high school musical to a confusing rotation of new characters we just couldn't bond with. But hey, it's Ryan Murphy we're talking about... deviating from what works is kind of his thing.

14 of 20

'Suits'

'Suits'
Untitled Korsh Company Hypnotic Films & Television

We loved the swagger, the high-stakes legal drama, and the bromance, but once Mike and Rachel left to go save the world (and become actual royalty), the spark just wasn't the same. It should have ended with the original dream team intact rather than trying to reinvent the firm yet again.

15 of 20

'The Simpsons'

'The Simpsons'
Fox

Like the rest of the world, we'll always worship the first 10 seasons as the bible of comedy, but let's be honest—this series isn't the one we're running toward when new episodes drop. It’s hard to see our favorite yellow family struggle to stay relevant after 30+ years, when the Golden Era was just so perfect.

16 of 20

'Family Guy'

'Family Guy'
Fuzzy Door Productions

Like The Simpsons, we've had enough of Family Guy—no matter how much the show is etched into the fabric of pop culture.

17 of 20

'Grey's Anatomy'

'Grey's Anatomy'
ABC

And although we love Shonda Rhimes—she's getting it, too. At this point, Grey's Anatomy has seen more disasters than a small country, and the staff turnover is higher than your local fast food spot. Despite that, we still tune in out of loyalty, but we miss the magic of the original interns in the basement. Now, it just feels like an endurance test.

18 of 20

'Supernatural'

'Supernatural'
CW

We loved the Winchester brothers, but there are only so many times you can die, go to hell, and come back before the stakes feel non-existent. Fifteen seasons of saving the world were about ten seasons too many for our emotional stability. Sorry.

19 of 20

'The Walking Dead'

'The Walking Dead'
AMC

It started as a gripping survival masterpiece, but somewhere around the fifth villain monologue and the hundredth zombie horde, we just got tired. We stuck it out for a while, but eventually, the misery became too much to bear without feeling exhausted.

'Once Upon a Time'

'Once Upon a Time'
ABC

The first season was a brilliant fairytale remix, but the family tree got so complicated that we needed a diagram to follow it. By the time they did a "soft reboot" in the final season, the magic had fully run out.
