Limp Bizkit, formed in 1994 in Jacksonville, Florida.  With Fred Durst on vocals, Wes Borland on guitar, the late Sam Rivers on bass, John Otto on drums, and DJ Lethal on turntables, the band created a sound that mixed rap, rock, and raw attitude. As a result, the band is widely known for capturing the spirit of late 90s youth culture. Their aggressive lyrics and explosive stage presence defined a generation, with several songs becoming iconic anthems.

“Counterfeit”(1997)

Extracted from their debut album, Three Dollar Bill, Y’all (1997), “Counterfeit” was released as the band’s first single. With it’s explosive guitar riffs and a heavy rhythm, the song attacks fake personalities while showcasing an earlier, rawer version of the band. Also notable for showcasing guitarist Wes Borland’s experimental playing style, the song was written by the band as a response to local bands that copied thier style.

“Break Stuff”(1999)

Often cited as the ultimate Limp Bizkit anthem of rage, this track features a seething build-up and a fist-swinging breakdown. The mass appeal of the song captures the true essence of the band and the nu-metal genre as a whole. Ultimately, it has become a staple at concerts and a fan favorite for decades.

Released as the fourth and final single from their second studio album, Significant Other (1999), The song remains a popular staple of Limp Bizkit’s live shows.

“Re-Arranged”(1999)

From the Significant Other album, this track reveals a reflective and emotional side of the band. With it’s smooth bassline and melancholic lyrics, the song shows much maturity and depth beyond their typical aggressive style. Released on October 12, 1999, “Re-Arranged” was the band’s only number one single on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

“Rollin”(2000)

A populist nu-metal anthem known for its catchy fusion of upbeat energy and street swag, this song brings people together with an easy-to-shout-along chorus, making it a global hit and a fan favorite.

The song’s hip-hop remix of “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)” features hip-hop artists DMX, Method Man and Redman, and was produced by Swizz Beatz. Included as the second-to-last track on the Chocolate Starfish album, this version is also featured on the soundtrack to the iconic 2001 film The Fast and the Furious.

“Take a Look Around” (2000)

Released in 2000 for the Mission: Impossible 2 Soundtrack, “Take a Look Around” combines Limp Bizkit’s heavy sound with cinematic appeal. Featuring a memorable riff, and lyrics touching on distrust and modern chaos, which cemented the band’s mainstream success. The main riff of the song is derived from the original Mission: Impossible theme composed by Lalo Schifrin.

The first single on their third album, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, the song was released on July 3, 2000.

Limp Bizkit and Their Fans Deliver Heartfelt Tributes to Sam Rivers

On October 18, 2025, co-founder and bassist Sam Rivers died at the age of 48. The band announced his passing through an emotional tribute on social media. They described Rivers as “Our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat”, while praising his irreplaceable contribution to their music.

Although the cause of death has not been officially revealed, Rivers had a documented history of alcohol-related liver disease. Rivers left the band in 2015 due to those particular health issues, later undergoing a successful liver transplant. He rejoined Limp Bizkit in 2018 and remained with the band until his death. Tributes from bandmates and fans have poured in, highlighting his talent, spirit, and the profound impact Rivers had on the nu-metal genre.

Limp Bizkit’s Legacy Continues

To date, Limp Bizkit has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and has sold an estimated 35 to 40 million records worldwide. With a current lineup includes Fred Durst, John Otto, Wes Borland, DJ Lethal, the band remains active, with a career spanning from 1994 to the present.
