We have heard for some time now that Ryan Reynolds is cooking up a new Deadpool project for the MCU as a follow-up to Deadpool & Wolverine. Only it won’t be a traditional Deadpool 4. Reports came out last year that he was working on a team movie, with Wade Wilson in a supporting role. A project which most Marvel fans, ourselves included, believed to be X-Force. And while it still may be, a new rumor, reported by the folks at Cartier Films (via Geek Tyrant), suggests the team will actually be Marvel’s first-ever Canadian superteam, Alpha Flight.
According to this report, which we have to chalk up as rumor right now, Reynolds is writing this project. It might be its own thing, or carry the name Deadpool in the title. One aspect that should really prove interesting is that Marvel may use Alpha Flight to introduce Wolverine into the MCU. And probably with a new actor in the role. In the comics, Alpha Flight was the Canadian government’s superteam that Wolverine once served on. Its roster included members like Guardian, Northstar, Aurora, Shaman, Sasquatch, Puck, and Snowbird. Despite being Canadian, Wade Wilson was never an Alpha Flight member in the comics.
This may just be a rumor, but it nevertheless rings true to us. We know Ryan Reynolds loves using his Canadian nationality for humor’s sake. And nothing at Marvel works for that more than Alpha Flight. Although often used as the butt of jokes, the truth is, Alpha Flight had its own ongoing series that ran 130 issues. Superstar artist (and DC Comics CCO) Jim Lee even got his start in an issue of Alpha Flight. And since they are almost all mutants, it would fit in with the upcoming post-Secret Wars Mutant Saga. While an X-Force title makes the most sense commercially, we think Alpha Flight would be the most fun.
