Disney is going ahead and doing a live-action "Lilo & Stitch" sequel

The live-action "Lilo & Stitch" has been the biggest success of 2025 thus far. It will likely be the first billion-dollar movie of the year. The cult of Stitch is strong. To that end, it isn't too surprising that Disney has gone ahead and already announced a sequel to the live-action "Lilo & Stitch" before the first movie is even out of theaters.

Now, we know literally nothing else about this movie, but this is still big news. It is very unlikely that this film will be a live-action remake of the 2005 direct-to-video movie "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch." There hasn't been a live-action sequel of an animated sequel at this point from Disney. The closest is "Mufasa," and that was a prequel. You can't really do a prequel with "Lilo & Stitch," though, unless you want to just focus on Lilo or Stitch.

Delivering a new story in the world of "Lilo & Stitch" is intriguing from Disney, but also potentially risky. There won't be laurels to rest on or an old story to retell. It will be interesting to see how this project comes together.
