Director Denis Villeneuve is returning to Arrakis. He already split Frank Herbert’s seminal original sci-fi novel into two films. Now he’s adapting the author’s second book, Dune: Messiah, for the screen. Only, it sounds like Villeneuve’s film won’t be called that. Despite saying he’s not making a trilogy, Variety reports that the official title for his third Dune movie is Dune: Part Three.
According to the publication, Rentrak lists the third and final film in Villeneuve’s blockbuster films as Dune: Part Three. This isn’t exactly a surprise, but it wasn’t an obvious choice from a creative standpoint. The director has previously said he’s not doing a traditional Dune trilogy, but rather a “diptych” followed by another film. Calling it “Part Three” certainly makes it sound like a trilogy, whereas Dune: Messiah would have fit with his vision more.
Villeneuve’s, regardless of its title, will partly shoot the movie with IMAX cameras. However, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond apparently misspoke when he said Villeneuve would shoot the entire film that way. That’s what Christopher Nolan is currently doing with his adaptation of The Odyssey.
In addition to returning stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, the film will also star newcomer to the series Robert Pattinson. Jason Momoa also spoiled that he’ll also be back as Duncan Idaho despite the character dying in the first movie. (As the kids say, “If you know you know.) Anya Taylor-Joy, who briefly appeared as the adult version of Paul’s unborn sister in Dune: Part Two will also return for Part Three.
Once Villeneuve finishes this film he’s leaving Arrakis behind for good. He has said he won’t make a fourth film. Plus, he already lined up another job. He’s directing the next James Bond movie. If he ever makes another 007 movie we’re able to report now it won’t be called James Bond: Part Two.
