Disney is bringing Star Wars back to theaters. In 2027, Star Wars Starfighter hits theaters, a year after the theatrical film The Mandalorian and Grogu in May of 2026, and April 2027’s rerelease of A New Hope to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. While people have an idea of what to expect from The Mandalorian and Grogu since it’s based on the Disney+ show, Star Wars Starfighter is a more mysterious project, which might make it more exciting.

On director Shawn Levy’s Instagram, Levy shared the first image from filming the movie. He tagged it as “somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea” with the hashtag #Starfighter. The image shows the film’s star Ryan Gosling and co-star Flynn Gray, who is reportedly playing Gosling’s nephew in the movie. The two appear to be on a boat out in the ocean, and they both look decked out in some kind of equipment.
The film will also co-star Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Shawn Levy is perhaps best-known for directing Deadpool and Wolverine, so it will be interesting to see how he goes from the raunchy R-rated romp to the classic space opera world.
The film takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker, but it will not be part of the main Skywalker Saga of movies and will instead focus on new characters. That doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see familiar faces, though. There might be cameo appearances from some of our old friends; however, the movie will not center around anyone we know. Levy wishes to further explore the galaxy and tell other stories that might not be about Jedi and Sith.
The Mediterranean filming location could also be a way for the movie to explore new territory. While the Star Wars galaxy does include watery worlds like Kamino and underwater-dwelling races like the Gungans and the Mon Calamari, it has a surplus of desert worlds like Tatooine and Jakku. Star Wars Starfighter could break some new ground by giving us planets that look and feel different from the usual Star Wars fare. An ocean adventure might be just what the series needs.
The film is set for release on May 28th, 2027, which gives fans a lot of time to speculate. Are we in for a seafaring adventure, or will the bulk of the movie take place on yet another desert planet? The title tells us that we will likely see plenty of the trademark space battles the series is known for, but exactly who will be fighting against whom still remains to be seen. In any case, Star Wars is about to enter a new era.
