Foo Fighters hadn't released new music since 2023, but that is changing. First, the band dropped a cover of Minor Threat's "I Don't Wanna Hear It," a throwback to Dave Grohl's youth in the D.C. hardcore scene.
Now, the band has also released a new song, entitled "Today's Song."
Notably, the press release for the drop of "Today's Song" makes a point of noting the band's lineup remains the same, but makes no mention of who played drums on "Today's Song." This is, of course, in the wake of the band parting ways with journeyman drummer Josh Freese, who had stepped into the hole left by the sudden, tragic death of Taylor Hawkins. Maybe Grohl just did the drumming himself and decided he'll figure the rest out.
That would be apropos, as these releases are part of a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the first Foo Fighters album, which came out in 1995. We'd call it the band's debut album, which is in a certain way true, but "Foo Fighters" was a solo project for Grohl after the death of Kurt Cobain led to the dissolution of Nirvana. This has always been, first and foremost, a Grohl project, and thus the lineup of the band and the band's output bends to the whim of Grohl.
Of course, Grohl's dedication speaks to him as a music lifer, and so expect more new stuff from Foo Fighters in the near future. Whoever the drummer is.
