Francis Ford Coppola embraces Razzie win

People rarely have a chill, middle-of-the-road reaction to the Golden Raspberry Awards, aka the Razzies. The Razzies are about poking fun at the worst in the year in movies. It started small and then started to get some momentum. Then, they started to get a bit obvious, maybe even a bit lazy. A bit of couching the whole thing was fair. However, suddenly, to a lot of people the Razzies were public enemy number one. There was something egregious about the very idea of the Razzies. How dare they poke fun at movies! People have called for the end of the Golden Raspberry Awards, but not the Oscars, as if though only one end of the critical spectrum is valid.

The Razzies remain fairly small, and they mostly poke gentle fun at rich, famous celebrities. On the occasion they nominate a smaller movie, generally speaking it's some work of conspiratorial nonsense. They aren't perfect, and the humor can be a bit obvious and sweaty, but let's not lose our minds over the Razzies.

Fortunately, some Razzie winners have had fun with the silliness of it all. Both Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock have accepted their Razzies with aplomb. Also, they won for "Catwoman" and "All About Steve" respectively, two awful movies that were worthy winners. They both deserved their Razzies more than their Oscars, to be honest.

"Madame Web," a truly woeful work of cinema, was the big winner at the Razzies, but Worst Director went to Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola didn't just take the win in stride, he fully embraced his win as a point in the favor of "Megalopolis."

Coppola asserted that "Megalopolis" was a shot against the bow of IP-driven filmmaking all about the bottom line. He also asserted a belief that, in time, the film will be reconsidered as a work of quality cinema. His Instagram post was perhaps a smidge grandiose, but to be fair he's Francis Ford Coppola. He directed "The Godfather" trilogy and "Apocalypse Now." He's just fine.

Kudos to Coppola for not fighting his Razzie win, but wrapping his arms around it. Literally nobody's career has been hurt by the Razzies. Coppola's place in film history is entrenched. It is just a bunch of people voting about whatever, which is true of every movie awards event. Maybe everybody could afford to chill a bit. We will still have robust opinions about most of the Oscar winners, though.
