From ‘Easy A’ to ‘Zombieland’: The 20 reasons we love Emma Stone

On November 6, Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone turns 30 years old. She's accomplished quite a bit since she first came on the scene in 2004, and for that, it's time to wish her a happy birthday in the best way possible: with a stroll down memory lane.

Note: This is a celebration of Emma Stone, so no, her role in "Aloha" will not be acknowledged. Nor will those sad "Spider-Man" films.

So, Emma Stone’s (still credited as "Emily Stone") “official” mainstream introduction was as a contestant on VH1’s reality show competition for a "Patridge Family" backdoor pilot when she was 16. (Same for Teddy Geiger!) And if you’ve never seen this, you’ve missed out on some highly entertaining — though maybe not always for the best reasons — aughts reality competition. It definitely makes you appreciate "La La Land" (and Emma Stone as a whole) more.

Violet Trimble, "Drive" (2007)

This one is only slightly more memorable than the New Partridge Family thing, but it’s also the other one-season FOX series starring Nathan Fillion. ("The Drive" cult fandom is decently-sized, but it’s certainly no "Firefly" fandom) Drive’s existence does bring up an important question though: Can we get Dylan Baker to play Emma Stone’s dad against ASAP? Is there any way she’d do "The Good Fight"?

Here we go, getting into Emma Stone becoming a known quality. (In fact, she won the “Exciting New Face” award at the 2008 Young Hollywood Awards for this movie.) As Jules, her house party is the intended destination for Seth (Jonah Hill — who Stone would go one to work with again) and Evan (Michael Cera), and she is the object of Seth’s affection (and victim of his accidental headbutt to the eye).

Natalie, "The House Bunny" (2008)

Natalie, "The House Bunny" (2008)

With Natalie, she probably gets to play the least “Emma Stone type character,” as the awkward leader of this even more awkward band of sorority misfits in this underrated Anna Faris comedy. Simply put, it’s a much better "Revenge of the Nerds." Thank you, Emma Stone. Thank you, Anna Faris.

And now we come to badass, zombie-killing Emma Stone.

Olive Penderghast, "Easy A" (2010)

Ah yes, "Easy A" — the movie that temporarily revived the teen genre at the time. Depending on who you ask, this is Emma Stone’s definitive role. The rest of the movie honestly could’ve been terrible, and it would still deserve an easy A grade for the “Pocketful of Sunshine” scene.

"Les Jeunes de Paris," "Saturday Night Live" (36x04 - 2010 | 37x06 - 2011)

As much as any host could be a regular in the "Les Jeunes de Paris" recurring sketch, Emma Stone was a regular in the "Les Jeunes de Paris" recurring sketch. Meaning, she appeared in two (out of the five) of these sketches and was actually part of the first appearance of the sketch.

What begins as a Ke$ha riff turns into something quite bizarre, and… You kind of have to watch it to get it. And to begin the Emma Stone/Andy Samberg holy trinity.

This is the first time Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling play love interests, and you know what? It might actually be better than the second time.

Emma Stone and Andy Samberg are literally only in one scene of the film — as the soon-to-be exes of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis’ respective characters — but it’s honestly a really good bit. (And in the better of the two “friends with benefits” movies that came out that year. Sorry, "No Strings Attached.") And just kind of perfect casting for what the movie is. As evidenced by this next role...

Mia, "La La Land" (2016)

This is the movie Emma Stone won the Academy Award (Best Actress) for. Maybe you’ve heard of it? While Mia may not have realized she should BCC all the agents in Hollywood to come to her one-woman show, you know what? At least she was better than Seb. That’s the real takeaway from La La Land, kids.

“High School Theatre Show,” "Saturday Night Live" (42x08 - 2016)

This recurring SNL sketch plays the same beats each time, but it also works each time. The two best versions of this sketch have come from Emma Stone and Cameron Diaz's episodes, with the former "kind of [making] a good point."

It’s a shame "Battle of the Sexes" award season talk died down like it did, because Stone was pretty damn good as tennis legend Billie Jean King.
