'Game of Thrones' movie gets obvious title 'Aegon's Conquest'
Aegon Targaryen looks out the red lit sky of the sea to Westeros in an animated short for Game of Thrones HBO/IGN

Valyrian dragons are coming to theaters. After years of rumors and false starts, a Game of Thrones movie is finally happening. We already knew what it was about. Now we know its title. And it’s the most obvious one possible. A Game of Thrones movie about Aegon the Conqueror’s conquest of the Realm is taking the direct approach with the title Aegon’s Conquest.

Warner Bros. revealed the name of its upcoming Game of Thrones movie at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The title was included in the studio’s “2027 and beyond” tease. Andor writer and House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon is penning the script for Aegon’s Conquest.

Though uninspiring, this title is not exactly a surprise. Aegon’s Conquest has been a ubiquitous term in HBO’s tales of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s never far from characters’ minds because it forever reshaped Westeros. The dragonlord and his two-sister wives of House Targaryen, the last surviving family of the Valyrian Freehold, united (most) of the Seven Kingdoms, setting up a dynasty that lasted almost three hundred years until Jaime Lannister slew the Mad King.

Aegon’s exploits are famous throughout Westeros, but as A Song of Ice and Fire has shown, history is not always what it seems. There will be misconceptions and surprises to learn about the famed Conqueror, whose story Warner Bros. and HBO have tried to bring to the screen before. The idea has been under consideration since at least 2016. At multiple points, the Aegon’s Conquest movie was developed as a Game of Thrones spinoff series. One of them would have portrayed him as a “drunken lout,” though that was long before we learned why Aegon turned his gaze to Westeros on House of the Dragon.

What kind of Aegon will we get in Aegon’s Conquest? Despite the Game of Thrones movie’s title, it’s not obvious.
