Gunther from 'Friends' reveals Stage 4 cancer diagnosis

The feel-good Friends nostalgia has been running rampant since HBO Max released Friends: The Reunion on May 27, but James Michael Tyler revealed devastating news Monday morning (June 21).

Tyler, best known for playing Central Perk's quippy boss Gunther on Friends, revealed to Today's Craig Melvin that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in September 2018 that spread to his bones:

When asked about his prognosis, Tyler was blunt: "Stage 4, late-stage cancer, so eventually it's gonna probably get me."

While he's still alive, though, Tyler is adamant about using his unfortunate reality to encourage other men to get checked early.

"I would have gone in earlier, and you know, would've been hopefully caught earlier," he said through tears. "Next time you go in for just for a basic exam or your yearly checkup, please ask your doctor for a PSA test. [If] caught early, it's 99 percent treatable. ... My goal now is to help save at least one life."

Tyler's Gunther, who humorously harbored an intense crush on Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), was a reliable scene-stealer across 150 episodes during the iconic '90s sitcom's 10-season run from 1994 to 2004 whenever the crew ventured into Central Perk.

The 59-year-old did make a brief appearance during Friends: The Reunion, but because of his condition, he only appeared via Zoom.

"I wanted to be a part of that, and initially I was going to be on the stage, at least, with them, and be able to take part in all the festivities," Tyler revealed, according to Today's writeup on his segment. "It was bittersweet, honestly. I was very happy to be included. It was my decision not to be a part of that physically and make an appearance on Zoom, basically, because I didn't wanna bring a downer on it, you know? ... I didn't want to be like, 'Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer.'"

Tyler added that David Schwimmer, who famously played Ross Geller for the series's duration, has reached out to him on Instagram.
