Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are so back. That's right, we are only five months away from seeing them reunited on our screens in Nisha Ganatra's Freakier Friday.
In the film, Curtis and Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman. The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.
The sequel is based on the book Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers and has Chad Michael Murray, Rosalind Chao, and Mark Harmon also returning. The rest of the cast includes Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Vanessa Bayer.
"It checks every box that you would want," Curtis told TODAY. "It has the nostalgia of the original movie with Pink Slip and Chad Michael Murray."
"It's just been such a labor of love to make happen," Lohan shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "Jamie and I... even at the table read, we were just smiling so big that we couldn't... I don't think we were acting well because we were so happy." She also described the movie as "really fun" and revealed that Anna's band, Pink Slip, is back together.
The first film was released back in 2003, which means that when the sequel is released, 22 years will have passed. So why was the wait so long? "We couldn’t have made this movie until now, because Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old," Curtis, who is upgrading from a mother/daughter switch to grandma/granddaughter switch, explained on TODAY.
Freakier Friday will be released in theaters on August 8.
