Iconic '90s sitcom stars who are still doing the sitcom thing

The 1990s was a wonderful decade for sitcoms. Some of those sitcom stars moved onto film and never looked back. Others went on to dramatic television. There are a few that are no longer with us as well, and also a few that are more-or-less retired. However, there are also ‘90s sitcom stars who are still at it. They are starring in current sitcoms and continuing to do what they, arguably, do best. There are some reboots in the mix, of course, so let’s start there and then branch out.

Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer
Paramount+

Spinoffs are not a given success, but “Frasier” was a massive success as a “Cheers” spinoff. Grammer’s Frasier Crane moved back to Seattle and got into a series of Emmy-winning adventures. After “Frasier” ended, Grammer couldn’t find another successful sitcom, so he went back to what worked. He has been starring in the “Frasier” reboot on Paramount+ for a couple of seasons.

John Larroquette

John Larroquette
NBC

Larroquette won four Emmys for playing Dan Fielding on “Night Court.” When that show was rebooted, much of the original cast was either too old or too not-alive to be part of it. The connection to the original became Larroquette. He returned to the role of Fielding, though now as a public defender.

John Goodman

John Goodman
ABC

ABC brought back “Roseanne,” but then Roseanne Barr tweeted her way out of a job. The network and the producers pivoted, with the show rebranded as “The Conners.” Even without the erstwhile titular matriarch, the show succeeded, getting a seven-season run. In addition to Goodman as Dan Connor, we must shout out Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, and Lecy Goranson, who have all stuck it out for the long haul on “The Conners.”

Tim Allen

Tim Allen
ABC

We have here now an actor who has not done a reboot of his ‘90s hit, though Allen’s characters have remained very Tim “The Toolman” Taylor-esque. Allen’s “Home Improvement” follow-up “Last Man Standing” was a legitimate success, running for nine seasons and 194 episodes. He’s now back on ABC with “Shifting Gears,” where he plays a father who loves classic cars and hot rods. What a stretch! Now, though, his daughter is an adult with kids of her own, played by fellow sitcom stalwart Kat Dennings.

Jean Smart

Jean Smart
HBO

Annie Potts has been guesting on “George & Mandy’s First Marriage” after having a regular role on “Young Sheldon,” but another of her “Designing Women” costars is worth highlighting. Though “Hacks” is not a traditional, multi-cam sitcom, it is a through-and-through comedy show. Smart plays an aging standup on the show and has won three Emmys for her performance.

Mary Lynn Rajskub

Mary Lynn Rajskub
FXX

Rajskub joined “The Larry Sanders Show” during its fabled HBO run, and was also on some episodes of “Veronica’s Closet” around the turn of the millennium. Her best-known role is probably for a drama, as she played Chloe on “24.” Most of Rajskub’s career has been comedic, though, and in 2025 she began a co-starring role in “North of North.” The Canadian sitcom airs on CBC, but like “Schitt’s Creek,” is being imported to the United States. (Images from "North of North" are in short supply at present, but here's Rajskub reprising her "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" role in 2024.)

Lisa Kudrow

Lisa Kudrow
Netflix

Courtney Cox and Matt LeBlanc have had sitcom runs end. Matthew Perry is unfortunately no longer with us. David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston are on dramatic shows. Kudrow is holding up the comedic end of the bargain from the “Friends” cast. “Time Bandits” was a comedy-drama type show, like the film it was based on, though the 2024 show was canceled after one season. At the end of 2024, though, the dark comedy “No Good Deed” debuted on Netflix with Kudrow in the cast. While a second season has not been announced to date, the show has also not been canceled.

Rhea Perlman

Rhea Perlman
FOX

Like Grammer, Perlman rose to prominence on “Cheers,” winning multiple Emmys for her portrayal of Carla. While she hasn’t had a successful live-action show since “Cheers,” her distinctive voice has helped her on the animation front. Perlman is part of the cast of Apple TV+’s “Curses!” which, like many Apple TV+ shows, you may not have heard of. It’s gotten multiple seasons, though.

Brad Garrett

Brad Garrett
ABC

Patricia Heaton has had a couple of shows since “Everybody Loves Raymond,” but doesn’t have one now. Garrett had another sitcom as well, “Til Death,” which got unexpectedly weird back in the day. The deep-voiced actor and standup was on ABC’s “Not Dead Yet,” but that got canceled in 2024. He lends his voice to “WondLa,” which is…kind of comedic. If this feels like a dicey inclusion, the titular Raymond, Ray Romano, is on “No Good Deed” with Kudrow.

Christa Miller

Christa Miller
Apple TV+

Drew Carey is now an entire generation’s host of “The Price is Right” (if kids still watch that show when they are home on a snow day or sick day), but other “The Drew Carey Show” cast members have stuck to sitcoms. Miller returned to lend her voice to “Clone High,” though that reboot got canceled in 2024. However, Miller is on “Shrinking,” and while that is more of a dramedy, the Emmys consider it a comedy. Of course, it also considers “The Bear” a comedy, so there's that/

Jenna Elfman

Jenna Elfman
ABC

Elfman has done an unexpected amount of drama since the end of “Dharma & Greg,” where she played the whimsical Dharma. That being said, there’s still some comedic itch for her, evidently. Elfman is in the cast of “Shifting Gears” as well, though in a recurring role. That means one shouldn’t expect to see her in every episode, but Elfman will be popping in here and there.

Sheryl Lee Ralph

Sheryl Lee Ralph
ABC

Ralph had a role in the seventh season of “Designing Women,” but for ‘90s TV watchers, she’s best known for her role on “Moesha.” She’s worked steadily for decades, but definitely found a role with real legs here in the 2020s. Ralph is in the “Abbott Elementary” cast, and she has won an Emmy for the show.

David Alan Grier

David Alan Grier
NBC

Grier has an MFA from Yale. That’s just a fun fact for you. While he’s best remembered as a cast member on “In Living Color,” he also had a recurring role on “Martin” in the 1990s. Though Grier’s sitcom “DAG” didn’t take off just after the new millennium, he’s done just fine for himself. His latest show is the NBC sitcom “St. Denis Medical.” You’ll never believe it, but it’s a mockumentary.

Cedric the Entertainer

Cedric the Entertainer
CBS

Though two leads from definitive Millennial Sitcoms, Max Greenfield and Beth Behrs, are in the cast of “The Neighborhood,” we’re looking earlier than that here. Like Drew Carey, Steve Harvey once had an eponymous sitcom. Like Carey, he’s now a game show host. Cedric the Entertainer was also in the cast of “The Steve Harvey Show,” though, and he’s still doing sitcom acting. We guess that makes him the Christa Miller of that cast?

15 of 16

Damon Wayans

Damon Wayans
CBS

Wayans was on “In Living Color,” but he was not one of the Wayans from “The Wayans Bros.” Also, his sitcom “My Wife and Kids” debuted in 2001. However, let us not forget “Damon,” even if that only aired for 13 episodes in 1998. Basically, we wanted to acknowledge the Wayans family’s prominent role in ‘90s comedy. Plus, we wanted to note Wayans is starring in the sitcom “Poppa’s House” with his son Damon Wayans Jr., which is fun.

Ted Danson

Ted Danson
Netflix

One more “Cheers” cast member. Of course, Danson was the lead of “Cheers,” and he’s sitcom royalty. Additionally, he had “Becker,” which debuted in 1998. Though “Mr. Mayor” only ran for two seasons and ended in 2022,” Danson is back at it. “A Man on the Inside” debuted on Netflix in 2024, and has already been ordered for a second season. Sitcom royalty, indeed.
