You know the Fantastic Four, but do you remember Disney’s Gargoyles? It was a mature, well-written animated series from the 1990s that told the story of a clan of stone gargoyles who come to life from sunrise to sunset. It has gained a large cult following in the years since it ended in 1997. In 2022, Disney started putting out comics based on the show. Now, the gargoyles will be teaming up with some unlikely allies: Marvel’s Fantastic Four.
According to ScreenRant, ” original Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman and artist Enid Balam will collaborate on Fantastic Four/Gargoyles #1, scheduled for an October release.” In fact, there will be two crossover adventures between Goliath’s gargoyle clan and Marvel’s first family: one released by Marvel and the other by Dynamite Entertainment. Gargoyles creator Greg Weissman had this to say about the project:
“It just feels perfect to have the First Family of the Marvel Universe interacting with the First Family of the Gargoyles Universe, i.e. the Manhattan Clan. These two sets of heroes, both operating out of Midtown Manhattan – one from the Baxter Building and one from the Eyrie Building – just have so much in common. And, let’s face it, in ways big and small, Stan & Jack’s Fantastic Four was a clear influence on the creation of Gargoyles back in the early ‘90s. Getting to work on this project really brought out the gleeful kid in me. SO MUCH FUN!”
With The Fantastic Four: First Steps almost upon us, the hype from the movie will likely still be alive when the comic comes out. The movie will usher in a new phase of the MCU, culminating in two new Avengers movies. Still, some may wonder why the Fantastic Four are teaming up with characters from an old Disney cartoon. Well, aside from the fact that Disney owns Marvel, the gargoyles met plenty of interesting characters on the show. They teamed up with King Arthur, and even had a run-in with Death himself. Meeting the Fantastic Four is just an extension of their bizarre encounters.
Nothing has been confirmed, but the press release announcing the crossover alluded to Tony Stark comparing facial hair with David Xanatos, the billionaire megalomaniac from Gargoyles. Perhaps Iron Man makes a cameo in the comics, or perhaps there will be a future team-up between Iron Man and the gargoyles. Either way, this crossover opens the door for some exciting adventures with Marvel superheroes and New York gargoyles.
