James Gunn's DC world may not have its Batman or Wonder Woman yet (and it's TBD on if David Corenwet will work as Superman), but it now has its Clayface. Because, you know, priorities. Well, that's actually true in one sense, as "Clayface" has a writer, director, filming schedule, and September 2026 release date, so the ball has gotten moving here in a way it hasn't on bigger character. Your Clayface? Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries.
Gunn wrote on Bluesky:
After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries. Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by this guy, and can't wait for you to see this film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan.
If you're wondering why Reeves, the director of "The Batman" whose movies are not considered within Gunn's DC universe, got name dropped, he's producing "Clayface." Also, yes, this film has a script from Mike Flanagan, the man behind critically-acclaimed horror shows such as "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass." This film is apparently more body horror than action flick, which is conceivable given that Clayface is a guy who, through scientific misadventure, finds himself entirely made of clay. Although in the world of the "Batwheels" show for small children he doesn't seem all that menacing.
As for Harries, if you aren't familiar that isn't surprising, and probably part of the intent. He's been on a couple TV shows that had promise but got canceled after one season, such as "Suspicion," and his most-prominent movie is 2019's "The Gentlemen." However, Corenswet was also effectively an unknown when cast as Superman. It would seem Gunn's intent is to find unknown actors with promise and hope to mint new stars. We'll see if that works with Harries.
