James Gunn is running the creative side of things for Warner Bros. when it comes to the DC movies. The first big foray under Gunn was "Superman," which he both wrote and directed. The movie has come out of the gate well, both critically and commercially. However, Gunn has no interest in simply replicating "Superman" over and over. "There’s not a company style," Gunn asserted when discussing the vision for DC Studios.
There are a few things in the works for DC Studios already (not including "The Batman 2" which exists outside Gunn's DC universe). There's "Wonder Woman," plus "Clayface," "Supergirl," and on the television side "Lanterns" and season 2 of "Peacemaker." It's "Clayface" that served as the jumping off point for Gunn, as he said, "'Clayface' is a totally different thing. Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do."
Gunn explained further in saying, "It’s not like every movie is gonna be like 'Superman'. The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. We don’t want people being bored."
In addition to making "Clayface" a proper horror film, "Supergirl" is going to be a space adventure, which is right in the wheelhouse of Gunn. He is, after all, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" guy. It would be repetitive if all the DC movies felt the same and that has been, at times, an issue with Marvel. Of course, diversifying genres is one thing. The other movies just have to be, you know, good.
