Jamie Lynn Spears on sister Britney's conservatorship: 'I did the take steps to help'

Jamie Lynn Spears's memoir Things I Should Have Said is due Jan. 18, but she isn't waiting until the book is released to get some things off of her chest.

Spears, the younger sister of Britney Spears, sat down with ABC News correspondent Juju Chang for a segment that aired during Wednesday's Good Morning America:

The 30-year-old actress, author and singer said that she "felt [Britney] was another mama" to her while they were growing up, but they grew apart as the years went on.

Per Chang, Jamie Lynn describes Britney's behavior in the memoir as "erratic, paranoid, spiraling," and then Jamie Lynn was asked to comment on the 40-year-old pop icon's current mental state.

"I can't really speak to anyone else's state of mind. I don't think that's fair." Jamie Lynn responded.

She then addressed the November dissolution of Britney's controversial 13-year conservatorship: "I was happy. First off, I don't understand—when it was put into place, I was a 17-year-old, I was about to have a baby, so I didn't understand what was happening. Nor was I focused on that. I was focused on the fact that I was a 17-year-old about to have a baby. I understand just as little about it then as I do now."

"There was a time where my sister asked me of her trust and will, if I would be the person who ensured that her boys got what they needed. Whether she's in a conservatorship or not, that was a very normal thing, I thought," she continued. "Once I realized that, you know what, she's in a conservatorship, I felt like I just didn't want to be a part of [it] until maybe she was out of the conservatorship. ... I took no steps to be a part of it."

Jamie Lynn emphasized that she "has always been my sister's biggest supporter" and clarified the adjacent role she allegedly did play in Britney's conservatorship.

"When she needed help, I set up ways to do so," she said. "[I] went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this all for our family. If it's gonna cause this much discord, why continue it? ... I did take the steps to help, but how many times can I take the steps without—she has to walk through the door."

By the end of the segment, Jamie Lynn got emotional and wiped tears away while reiterating how much she loves Britney and feels that she has "only ever loved and supported her, and done what's right by her, and she knows that, so I don't know why we're in this position right now."

Jamie Lynn also posted to Instagram about how "scary" it felt to "be so openly vulnerable for the first time in my life."

Britney likely won't see the post, though, as she unfollowed Jamie Lynn on Instagram earlier this month—fueling speculation of a rift between the sisters.

The Grammy winner did not mince words about her family in her June testimony that served as a catalyst to end her conservatorship—going so far as to say she wished to sue her entire family—or in public comments that can be seen here or here.
