Jennifer Lawrence has made it clear that returning to Mystique's blue skin is not high on her Hollywood wish list, revealing the exhausting makeup process pushed her to her limits.
The Oscar-winning actress, 36, portrayed the shape-shifting mutant in four X-Men films between 2011 and 2019.
Speaking in interviews with Allure magazine and the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence described the physical demands of transforming into Mystique, including hours of body painting, uncomfortable airbrushing and lasting damage to her hair.
Asked by Allure whether she would ever consider another role requiring extensive prosthetics, Lawrence delivered an emphatic response.
She said: "Never say never, but absolutely f****** not."
The actress explained that the application process was particularly unpleasant because of her sensitivity to touch and the cold air used during painting.
She said: "You know how air brushing is very cold? And I am ticklish. I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you've actually reached your breaking point. And patience!"
Despite her dislike of the makeup, Lawrence recalled enjoying the physical preparation required for the superhero franchise.
She said: "My favourite part of playing Mystique was the stunts."
Lawrence continued: "It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint."
Moneymaker also worked with Lawrence on The Hunger Games, in which the actress portrayed Katniss Everdeen.
Their longstanding professional relationship helped Lawrence navigate the demanding action sequences involved in both franchises.
However, the transformation into Mystique presented an entirely different challenge, particularly during production of X-Men: First Class in 2011.
Speaking on Call Her Daddy, Lawrence recalled spending eight hours in the makeup chair whenever the character's distinctive appearance was required.
She said: "For 'First Class,' it was all body paint and glue. It was eight hours every time and ticklish."
Lawrence added: "You've had air brushing, right? Imagine two tiny, cold, compressing air brushes all over your body. I am a hero. No one will understand what I went through."
The elaborate process involved covering her skin with layers of blue coloring to recreate the character's appearance from Marvel's comic books.
Lawrence also revealed that the difficulties began before filming, when she underwent an intensive screen test for the role.
The actress said her hair was dyed repeatedly during a single day, changing between red, brown, black and blonde.
According to Lawrence, the repeated chemical treatments caused permanent damage, adding another unwelcome consequence to her early experience with the superhero franchise.
She subsequently reprised Mystique in X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, completing an eight-year association with the character.
The role had previously been played by Rebecca Romijn, 53, in the original X-Men film trilogy.
Lawrence's comments come amid continuing interest in the future of Marvel's mutant characters following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
