Jeremy Allen White is opening up about why he first hesitated when it came to starring in Scott Cooper's Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.
At the time, since he never played guitar or sang professionally, he expressed to the director, "I was like, 'Look, I’d love to do this with you. I love Bruce. Are you sure you don’t want a guy that knows how to do these things already?'" He continued to explain to The New York Times, "Then at some point, Scott shared that Bruce wanted me to do it. And at that point I went, OK, I’m not going to stand in this man’s way."
From 20th Century Studios, “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Recorded on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works—a raw, haunted acoustic record populated by lost souls searching for a reason to believe.
According to Cooper, he was the only one they considered for the role. So, the actor had daily voice lessons with Eric Vetro and studied the instrument for around six months. White also prepared by listening to Bruce Springsteen's audio narration of "Born to Run," his memoir, on repeat.
"That was on in the house all the time," he commented. "When I’d go for a run, when I’m going for a walk, when I’m making dinner. It was helpful to have his voice with me all the time."
Odessa Young, who portrays Faye, spoke highly of her co-star, saying, "He locked in. He’s just extremely present and extremely focused, and it made the experience of watching him as Bruce almost spooky."
As for what audiences can expect from the story, Cooper previewed, "I was striving to make something that was quieter and more interior, which is about this very specific time in Bruce’s life, about a man who’s facing some of the trauma that he’s been carrying since childhood."
The rest of the cast includes Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham, Gaby Hoffman, Marc Maron, and David Krumholtz.
Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, based on Warren Zanes's book, will be released in theaters on October 24.
