Jesse Williams explains 'Grey's' exit and leaves the door open for Japril: 'I think it's pretty possible'

Grey's Anatomy said goodbye to Dr. Jackson Avery with last Thursday's episode "Tradition," and it was truly the end of yet another character era on primetime television's longest-running medical drama.

Jesse Williams, who portrayed the plastic-surgeon-turned-activist since the fifth episode of Season 6 in October 2009—that's 240 episodes and nearly 12 years—unpacked leaving Jackson behind with Deadline's Nellie Andreeva.

The 39-year-old actor and filmmaker nodded toward Jackson's ongoing identity crisis linked to his lifelong abandonment issues with his absentee father and the social rights movement in present day.

"I have to confront that, yeah, I’m not whole," Williams said. "I don’t have it together. I don’t know how to stay anywhere because I've got this huge thing hanging over my head, and I think it’s important to have examples of people, particularly men, and men of color, be vulnerable and say you know what, I don’t have it all together."

He continued: "I don’t care that I’m rich and girls like him, or whatever. So what? He doesn't know himself and it's important to paint examples of that and for him to go try to do something about that. I think that we agree, [showrunner] Krista [Vernoff] and I, that this character can't stay here. He needs to change his environment."

May 6's "Look Up Child" installment set the stage. Sarah Drew reprised her beloved Dr. April Kepner role.

Jackson fled Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to again confront his father (Eric Roberts) in Montana and finally get some answers. Once he did that, he showed up unexpectedly at April's doorstep and revealed his decision to leave Seattle behind for Boston, where he will run the Catherine Fox Foundation and rewire medicine from inside the system to serve historically oppressed groups.

After some back and forth, April agrees to move to Boston with him so that he can continue to be close with their daughter, Harriet.

Of course, any staunch Grey's fan already knows the history between April and Jackson: from losing her virginity to him, to an eloped marriage followed by tons of very traumatic issues and divorce. Harriet came along, making them co-parents and friends, but after April revealed at the end of "Look Up Child" that she and her husband, Matthew, had split up for good, the implication was for the most hopeful of #Japril fans that these two will finally have a happily ever after.

"Yeah, I think it’s pretty possible that he rekindles a romantic connection to his ex-wife," Williams told Andreeva. "They’re damn good together, but most importantly what he needs from that is friendship and kindness, and patience, and understanding, and I think that he will get that with her and be able to share and give and reciprocate it as well."

Williams added that he thinks "it's totally possible" that Jackson will have a guest appearance on Grey's at some point—the series was remarkably renewed for an 18th season—and loves the idea of that.

It's also definitely worth noting that he did not at all shut down the possibility of a "Japril" spinoff in a separate interview with TVLine.
