"Oh, come on!" screamed Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew) when a thunderstorm knocked the power out, and it sounded like she never left.
Drew had left April behind after Grey's Anatomy's Season 14 finale in May 2018—she later revealed she was "let go" because "the show had too many characters"—and #Japril stans were rewarded for their persistent loyalty when she reprised the beloved, neurotic April in Thursday night's episode ("Look Up Child").
There was even a nostalgic flashback montage!
Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) showed up at her doorstep during a storm. April was adorably frazzled because it wasn't his scheduled night to watch their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Harriet, but Jackson told her that's not why he came.
Viewers were bounced between Jackson confronting his absentee father, Robert Avery (Eric Roberts), at his Jefferson Grill in Montana for the first time since Season 13's "Who Is He (And What Is He To You)?" installment and unpacking it all with April at the home she now shares with husband Matthew.
Jackson's impromptu visit with Robert turned contentious when he demanded his father tell him why he left. Robert never actually answered because Jackson spiraled into vulnerably explaining how much his absence damaged him. He got so lost in his pent-up pain that he mutilated his hand with the meat slicer they were using to prepare meals for long-time customers.
Later, Robert finally addressed the question. "I was convinced you were better off without me," he reasoned.
"How could you think I'm better off without my father ever being there?" Jackson countered, then listed off all of the live events Robert's presence was necessary across his entire life.
Robert then added he was convinced he was the "screwup" of the Avery family, and he didn't want to pass that down to Jackson, though Jackson has been feeling similarly lately. Robert assured Jackson he is not a runner like him. "On your worst day," he said. "You are ten times the man I am."
In our last interview he told me what more he wanted to showcase from Jackson. It all makes sense now. Thread:

“I think I’d love to learn more about his father. What it is to live without having your dad bail on you..without that level...”
“...in terms of how it’s impacted his sense of identity and motivation and self-esteem. So I think, and it was really great to work with Eric Roberts a hell of a person and an actor. I’d love to see him and my mom.

I’d love to do a little more of that...”
Ultimately, Jackson realized that in the way his father didn't want to step into the responsibilities of the Avery name in the medical community, he does.
So, he went to tell April that he felt like he needed to move to Boston to run the Catherine Fox Foundation (formerly known as the Harper Avery Foundation), but April initially shut it all down. How could Jackson ask her to move across the country when they're no longer married, and she's happy with her life in Seattle? This prompted them to relive their past relationship qualms in order to figure out the best way forward.
Jackson made one more stop at his mother's, the Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen, who also directed this episode), to tell her he cannot continue on with status quo and stay in Seattle at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital when so many people of color have been lost and/or neglected, especially during the pandemic.
"I want to take over the foundation," he asserted, adding he must do this in order to be the father for Harriet that Robert never was for him. "I want to reallocate every penny that we have to equity in medicine. Women's health, trans health, racial equity—I want everyone who this country abuses to be served."
The hour concluded with Jackson and April at breakfast with Harriet on a now-sunny morning. April apologized for downplaying his discovery of who he believes he's meant to be. "Why is our timing always so terrible?" she asked, but she decided to support him. They will move together to Boston.
Ok I’m crying right now #japril

Oh, and one more thing: April and Matthew split up! Again!
So what does this mean? Will Japril endure? As friends, if not reconnected lovers?

Some questions may never have a concrete answer, as news broke Thursday evening that Williams is leaving Grey's after May 20's "Tradition" episode after 12 years as Jackson—just as Drew did in 2018.
