Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland have a surprising Marvel connection

In an interview with IMDb for The Accountant 2 , Jon Bernthal revealed that he actually read lines with Tom Holland for his Spider-Man audition tapes.

"He knew [he would be perfect for the role]," the actor shared, adding how he is actually working with him right now on Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. "He is the best, and he had such drive that young kid, he's like, 'I am gonna get this.' I was like, 'I don't know, a lot of people probably want it, buddy.'"

"We actually were in a very tiny town in Ireland, making this movie," he added, referring to Pilgrimage, which was released in 2017. "He read with me for Punisher, and I read with him for Spider-Man, and we both got cast."

Ben Affleck commented how Holland is "terrific," with Bernthal describing him as "wonderful."

Holland will next be reprising the role in the fourth Spider-Man film, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters on July 31, 2026. It will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who expressed at this year's CinemaCon, "I'm spending my time exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of the most incredible artists in the world. We're all, just daily, nerding out over the suit, how to swing, how to create an event, an emotional story, and a ride that we haven’t really seen before."

It is unclear if he will be part of the Russo Brothers' upcoming Avengers movies.

As for Bernthal, he was most recently seen in the season 1 finale of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. His co-star, Vincent D’Onofrio, was asked about the post-credits scene where Punisher escapes from his cage.

"I don’t think Kingpin would be Kingpin if he was afraid of Punisher, and vice versa. I don’t think Punisher would be Punisher if he was afraid of Kingpin. A meeting of those two has gone down before in the original Netflix series. I’m sure it will happen again at some point. I don’t know when, though," he explained. "So far it’s a small part of the second season. We have to see what the one-off thing that they’re planning on doing with the Punisher, that should be interesting to see. I don’t know if it’s a What If…? film or if it’s connected to our series or not, but it’ll be interesting to see. I love Jon’s Punisher. I think he does a great job on it."
