LEGO is boldly going where it has never gone before. It will soon embark on a whole new mission throughout the universe with its first-ever Star Trek partnership.
Last week, LEGO officially announced a new Death Star collectible. It’s the biggest Star Wars LEGO set ever, and with a $1,000 price tag, it’s also the company’s most expensive set ever. But it turns out that giant undertaking wasn’t big enough to satiate the iconic toy maker’s love of legendary sci-fi franchises. So it will soon let fans of the other “Star” series in on the plastic brick fun. Star Trek released a very short teaser video to let fans know they’ll soon be able to celebrate Gene Roddenberry’s franchise with official LEGO sets.
The video opens on a Transporter room as that famous theme music plays. A tiny mini figure of Captain Picard then beam onboard with a big dramatic reveal that is more Captain Kirk-ish. Why Picard rather than Kirk or Spock or any other famous Federation officer? Could this be a hint that the first Star Trek LEGO set we’ll be a Next Generation collectible? Almost certainly for the show’s Enterprise, which made a triumphant and emotional return on Picard?
Until we’re told differently we’re going to assume “yes definitely.”
Whatever set we get first, it’s clear it will be the first of many. Fans of both LEGO and Star Trek have waited a long time for this partnership and there are decades and generations worth of characters, shows, movies, and moments worthy of a LEGO set.
This new partnership only became possible last year when the sci-fi franchise’s rights deal with Bluebrixx came to an end. That collection has its fans who will surely find this news disappointing. But Star Trek fans know LEGO’s line won’t disappoint.
Plus, now there’s a whole new way to debate Star Wars and Star Trek. We can argue over which one has the better LEGO sets.
