There’s no denying that Yellowstone was a phenomenon when it made its debut. For starters, the hit Taylor Sheridan series had bona fide Western fixture Kevin Costner at the helm. The neo-Western barreled out of the gate on June 20, 2018, maintaining a steady clip until the on-set drama bled into the on-screen drama. Admittedly, Costner’s abrupt departure in the last act of the show hampered its conclusion, at least in this writer’s opinion.

Of course, Yellowstone isn’t the be-all and end-all of Westerns. If you’re on the lookout for a satisfying TV series to fill that Dutton Ranch-shaped hole in your heart, MovieWeb recently shared a list of (better) recommendations to add to your watchlist. The list, titled “10 Modern Western Series Better Than ‘Yellowstone,'” features beloved shows like Dark Winds, Deadwood, Hell on Wheels, and Justified.

‘Longmire’ Is Considered Better Than ‘Yellowstone’

One particular entry on said list, Longmire, deserves your attention. MovieWeb calls it “the actual blueprint for Yellowstone,” while noting that it’s “smaller in scale” but “more affecting.” For the uninitiated, Longmire follows the titular Walt Longmire, a “dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin, and dry wit.”

The neo-Western crime drama stars Robert Taylor as the aforementioned Longmire, Katee Sackhoff as Victoria “Vic” Moretti, Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry Standing Bear, Cassidy Freeman as Cady Longmire, Adam Bartley as The Ferg, Bailey Chase as Branch Connally, and Louanne Stephens as Ruby. John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin developed the show based on Craig Johnson‘s Walt Longmire Mysteries novel series.

Longmire premiered on June 3, 2012, on A&E, where it ran for three seasons before moving to Netflix for three more seasons, concluding on Nov. 17, 2017. Critically, it was well received, with its average Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes sitting at 88%, while the average Popcornmeter score is at 92%.

Where You Can Stream ‘Longmire’

Despite being a Netflix series for Seasons 4-6, the platform no longer carries Longmire in its streaming library. Thankfully, you can stream the show on its new home, Paramount+. You can also watch it for free on The Roku Channel. And if you’re on the hunt for a new subscription service, you can binge the series on Howdy for only $2.99 per month.
