While Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell will soon be seen sharing the big screen together in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, they also have another thing in common: their DC characters.
Surprisingly, they revealed to Entertainment Weekly that they never discussed the connection. "I don't think it came up once," Farrell shared. "No, we never mentioned, never spoke about it at all."
"We've done so much talking, and I don't think we've ever [discussed that]," Robbie added. "That's so weird." What makes it even crazier is that despite the fact that their characters "exist in so many different universes and multiverses," as Farrell put it, Robbie reveals there was actually a plan tied to her 2020 movie, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.
"The first draft that Christina [Hodson] wrote of Birds of Prey, the villain was the Penguin," Robbie explained, which shocked her co-star, "No way! Really?"
"And then [director/writer] Matt Reeves said, 'Don't use the Penguin. I'm going to use him in my thing,'" she continued. "And so we swapped it to Black Mask [played by Ewan McGregor]."
Robbie described Hodson's Penguin as "amazing," and promised to send him the script: "It's probably on my computer. You could read it."
"Oh, good, I'd love to [read it]," he commented. "That'd be so fascinating."
As for Harley Quinn's future in the DCU, she told Variety, "I’ve heard nothing," which led to Farrell asking her, "You never get sick of her?”
Robbie answered, "Never. You can’t get sick of Harley. I love her so deeply. I always had high hopes for her like Batman. A character that loves on long after I’ve had a go at it." Although she would support other actors taking on the role, adding, "I feel like I need to share Harley."
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey will be released in theaters on September 19.
