A24 isn’t afraid to take creative swings with its movies . Only this production company would drop a film where Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega run away from angry unicorns. But, in a world full of reboots, revivals, and re-imaginings, it feels good to see some truly unique content. A24’s next film is no different that its predecessors, with a story starring Timothée Chalamet as a 1950s era ping pong whiz who is chasing a wild dream. The first trailer for Marty Supreme promises a film that’s riveting and wholly intriguing.
The synopsis for the film doesn’t offer too much, simply stating that Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Mauser is “a young man with a dream no one respects” who is doing all he can to pursue greatness as a ping pong player. We wonder who would win in a match between him and Forrest Gump. (We love ya Tim, but our money is on Gump.)
It isn’t spelled out directly, but it seems that Marty Supreme is loosely based on Marty Reisman, an American table tennis champion in the 1940s and 1950s. He competed all the way to the Olympic level, securing several bronze medals in the process. Either way, this trailer for Marty Supreme looks like a creative match made in heaven between Chalamet and director Josh Safdie.
Marty Supreme also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler Okonma (better known as Tyler the Creator), Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher. It will hit theaters on Christmas Day 2025.
