Finally. It’s finally happening. Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino says his Disney+ special is getting the sequel MCU fans have been waiting for since they finished watching the original.
Longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe composer Michael Giacchino casually shared some pretty big news while appearing on Deadline‘s Sound & Screen panel. He was there to discuss his work on The Fantastic Four: First Steps score, which he said he completely re-wrote. During the event he talked about what it’s been like working for the MCU. That led to him sharing what he’s working on next: a sequel to Werewolf by Night, the only installment he both scored and directed. He’s returning to the director’s chair for the follow-up.
“If you haven’t seen [Werewolf by Night], watch it. It’s on Disney+ if you still have that,” said Giacchino with a not-so-subtle reference to the recent spate of cancellations the streamer faced in the wake of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension. A sequel to Werewolf by Night might help bring some of them back.
The standalone Disney+ Halloween special was a hit with viewers and critics alike. Along with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, it also seemed to create a great template to tell fun stories on the streaming site. More specials seemed like a no-brainer for Marvel. And since Werewolf by Night ended with its main characters (including Man-Thing) alive and free, it seemed like an obvious, deserving choice for a sequel. Instead Disney merely re-released the film in color.
Now we’re finally getting the next installment we’ve wanted ever since Gael García Bernal’s Jack Russell survived his encounter with those monster hunters. Of course, by “finally” we mean “at some point.” We don’t know when Giacchino is shooting his film or when we’ll see it. Maybe it’ll be in time for next Halloween. Or maybe we won’t see it until 2027. We hope it’s a lot sooner than that, but knowing we’re getting it eventually is still news worth howling over.
