"Mission: Impossible" director Christopher McQuarrie primed for third "Top Gun" already

"Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" has only just finished its first weekend at the box office. However, Tom Cruise is not one to sit still, and apparently his longtime directing compatriot Christopher McQuarrie is not either. Apparently he's already got "Top Gun 3" all locked and loaded from a script perspective.

After "Top Gun: Maverick" was a remarkable success (It saved the movies! Maybe!), it was not surprising when a third movie was greenlit. While Joseph Kosinski is expected to direct, McQuarrie was a writer and producer on "Maverick," because he and Cruise are practically a package deal at this point. On the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, McQuarrie was asked if he was having any issues with the script for a third "Top Gun." Yeah, he's not. "No, it’s already in the bag," he said, and later added, "Yeah, I already know what it is."

Actually,  McQuarrie was really feeling himself in the interview, even asserting, "The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack." Okay then! Sure, the "Mission: Impossible" movies have been largely successful, but McQuarrie walked into a franchise that was already up and running. That's not to say the scripts aren't, by and large, good. Although, The Entity was maybe not the best decision in the grand scheme of things.

When you see "Top Gun 3," or whatever it ends up being called, in theaters, just remember: Christopher McQuarrie felt like he absolutely crushed the script.
