In Hollywood, timing can be everything for a show or a movie. More specifically, TV shows may need to find the right home, which is what one former comedy pilot is hoping will be the case in its second go-round. Over a decade after a pilot was built out for an intriguing new comedy series for FOX, the series is getting a miraculous second life thanks to Netflix. Behind the pilot? The same crew that was involved in the first pitch, and a group that now has the mega-hit Ted Lasso under its belt.
However, the million-dollar question is, will the second time be the charm for a comedy series that undoubtedly has plenty of potential upside?
The streaming giant is officially in the casting stages for the comedy I Suck at Girls, as Production Weekly revealed. The series is expected to begin filming the pilot in Spring 2026, as What's on Netflix revealed, and it features writing by Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker.
Bill Lawrence's production studio, Doozer, is handling the pilot, along with Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, Chet Dave, Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. Not only is Doozer behind Ted Lasso, but Lawrence is the brainchild of the beloved comedy Scrubs, which just kicked off a reboot with much of the former cast returning.
Although Netflix hasn't produced pilots for many shows, What's on Netflix details that the trend began in 2023. The streamer did not pick up the series following the pilot for Little Sky, but did pick the reboot for A Different World.
Considering the immense success Ted Lasso has had at Apple TV, as the series now heads into its fourth season, it's hard not to be optimistic about the group in place handling the pilot. Lawrence's reboot of Scrubs has also been well-received, and there's reason for optimism that while things didn't pan out at FOX in 2013, 2026 could be the year for I Suck at Girls.
Although the plot of I Suck at Girls doesn't provide much info, What's on Netflix did give some details:
Although no specifics have been finalized about casting, the 2013 series was set to feature Law & Order: SVU star Christopher Meloni as the father, Jack. His son was cast as Connor Buckley for the role of Frankie, and Claudia Lee was slated to play his daughter, Rachel, as The Hollywood Reporter previously detailed.
