Owen Wilson and Peter Dager talk "big swings" in 'Stick' in new Yardbarker interview

Owen Wilson and Peter Dager star as Pryce and Santi in Apple TV+'s upcoming sports comedy, Stick. The series premieres globally with the first three episodes on Wednesday, June 4, followed by a new episode dropping every Wednesday through July 23.

“Stick” is a new sports comedy series created by Jason Keller and starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson. Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After the collapse of his marriage and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce hedges his bets, and future, entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi (Peter Dager). “Stick” is a heartfelt, feel-good sports comedy about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.

The duo spoke to Yardbarker about their characters' big swings and the small details of golf that they were most proud to get just right.

Wilson was upfront about his desire to make the golf seem authentic. "I've had to learn other things in shows, and I usually don't worry about it that much 'cause there's always a way they can kind of trick it where it looks good. But for some reason, with this one, maybe because my dad played, and I know friends that are really good, I felt more of a responsibility, a pressure, or almost anxiety that I wanted to, hopefully, make it as convincing as possible," Wilson explained. "That's probably why I started taking all the lessons, and you know, just to also soak up some of the jargon. And so, I think kind of getting to where I felt comfortable enough to be able to talk about golf in a way that felt real to me, I was happy with that."

Dager was no different. "A little detail that I practiced early on was, 'cause Santi hits a lot of good shots, the club twirl. They finish their swing, and they just, it's a flick of the index finger and the thumb, and the club just sort of twirls down. And I do it once in [episode] three, I don't know if it gets caught at any other time in the show, but that little detail was one, when I learned it, I'm like, 'I'm putting that [in].'"

Real-life golfers will be well represented in the new show with cameos coming from Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, Jim Nantz, and Trevor Immelman.
