People's Choice Awards: 20 winners who definitely did not show up at the Emmys, Oscars and Grammys

The 44th People’s Choice Awards air on E! — for the first time, as perhaps showing the dwindling relevance of the awards show, 2017 was the last time the show would be broadcast on CBS — on November 11, and as usual, you can look forward to some... interesting choices. The PCAs love Johnny Depp and Rascal Flatts — almost too much, for both acts — which definitely seems like something people also like.

Over the years, though, the choices made by this awards show (originally decided by Gallup polls, before going with all-online voting starting in 2005) have been a combination of obvious and head-scratching, especially as it features categories that would never appear on the "real" awards shows like the Emmys, Oscars, Golden Globes and Grammys. Just take a look.

"Friends" obviously got critical attention, and Matt LeBlanc circa "Episodes" was able to as well, but this? This is the baseline for the People’s Choice Awards, everyone. (And the other two shows nominated in this category — "Complete Savages" and "Father of the Pride" — didn’t make it past the first season.)

Has anyone ever tried to talk about the sanctity of the People’s Choice Awards?

While neither of these movies were exactly Oscar-caliber, it just seems wrong for Jennifer Garner — who is definitely “Favorite Female Action Star” material in general — in "Elektra" to beat Angelina Jolie in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Seriously.

Really? Of all the "X-Men" movies? And of all the "X-Men" actresses?

Favorite New Drama: "Moonlight" (34th People’s Choice Awards, 2008)

Favorite New Drama isn’t a category you’ll see at the Emmys or Golden Globes, but it’s definitely one for the People’s Choice Awards. And in 2008, the CBS vampire drama "Moonlight" won the award. Like the rest of the winners that year, series star Alex O’Loughlin accepted the award via satellite — Writers Strike season, baby — thanking the people for loving the show. The show was canceled after its first season, just four months later.

Movies like "Toy Story 3," "Inception" and "The Social Network" were also eligible in these categories. And yet, here we are. ("Twilight" got Favorite Movie at the 36th PCAs in 2010, as well. Yet somehow it lost Favorite Franchise to "Transformers." The numbers really don’t add up.)

It’s one thing to love Sam Rockwell’s dancing, but this is going too far. Then again, while one of the nominees in this category was actually worthy of this win — "Kick-Ass" — "Iron Man 2" is not so bad when you look at the other nominees: "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," "Robin Hood" and "Salt." Yikes.

This is the first baffling ("Favorite Online Sensation"? Really?) Katy Perry-centric win and category in this gallery, and it is definitely not the last.

He beat Chris Evans (Captain America in "Captain America: The First Avenger"), Chris Hemsworth (Thor in "Thor"), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique in "X-Men: First Class") and James McAvoy (Professor X in "X-Men: First Class"). This isn’t even an Oscars/Golden Globes vs. the People’s Choice Awards thing. This is a taste vs. the people thing. Because even Ryan Reynolds probably has his PCA for this movie hidden (or in the trash). Is now the proper time to say that the PCAs aren’t actually determined by fan vote but a combination of the producers and who is actually willing to show up to the awards show?

Remember how "The Help" was Oscar bait? Well, it was definitely not PCA bait, as it lost to "Water for Elephants." You remember "Water for Elephants," right? (It’s OK to say you don’t.) Yet Emma Stone won Favorite Movie Actress (for "The Help"), beating Reese Witherspoon (who starred in "Water for Elephants," which you remembered). (Emma Stone also won Favorite Comedic Movie Actress for "Crazy, Stupid, Love" that year, because as we all know, Movies and Comedic Movies are two different things.)

Really? Over Kristin Chenoweth on "Glee"? Over Michael J. Fox on "The Good Wife"? Even over Jim Carrey on "The Office" and Gwyneth Paltrow on "Glee," who weren’t good but at least make sense for being nominated in this category in the first place. (*looks at all the music categories this year, which Katy Perry sweeps…except for Favorite Pop Artist, somehow. Oh, OK.)

Favorite Music Fan Following: Katy Perry (39th People’s Choice Awards, 2013), Demi Lovato (40th People’s Choice Awards, 2014)

This category last appeared in 2014 (40th PCAs) and pretty much encapsulates the PCAs in a nutshell. Which fan base is more rabid and willing to devote way too much time to voting for this award (that none of the fans can accept)? Apparently, the Katycats (Katy Perry fans) and the Lovatics (Demi Lovato fans), respectively. The Katycats thing explains the Favorite TV Guest Star thing, at least.

Sarah Michelle Gellar never got Emmy or Golden Globe recognition for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so this PCA (her only nomination and win ever) for her existence in "The Crazy Ones" will have to do.

"The Castle" actress’ first nomination for Favorite TV Drama Actress was in 2013 (at the 39th PCAs, where she lost to Ellen Pompeo). But after beating actresses like Mariska Hargitay, Julianna Margulies and Sandra Oh the following season year, the PCAs decided to stop that from ever happening again by offering a Favorite Dramatic TV Actress and a Favorite Crime Drama TV Actress — which Katic won in 2015 and 2016.

Favorite Action Movie: "Divergent" | Favorite Dramatic Move: "The Fault in Our Stars" | Favorite Movie Duo: Shailene Woodley & Theo James, "Divergent" (41st People’s Choice Awards, 2015)

Shailene Woodley gets nominated for “real” awards, but at the 41st PCAs, the people had Woodley fever. Woodley was also nominated for Favorite Movie Duo against herself, winning (with Theo James) in "Divergent" while losing (with Ansel Elgort) in "The Fault in Our Stars." Somehow, she didn’t also win Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress. Chloe Grace Moretz took that one (for "If I Stay").

Honestly, the Emmys and the Golden Globes should have taken notes on this one.

Well, this is a double-edged sword, because Dakota Johnson has all the chops to get in on proper awards season ballots. But for her to win this award for "Fifty Shades of Grey"? That hurts. (She received the award from her "How To Be Single" co-stars, Alison Brie and Leslie Mann, too, which would've been a better win.)

I’m sorry, but the Golden Globes already informed us that "The Martian" falls under “Comedy” classification. This award should be stricken from the record.

In a perfect world, "The Fast and the Furious" franchise sweeps all awards categories.

Favorite Dramatic Actress: Blake Lively (43rd People’s Choice Awards, 2017)

While Blake Lively has gotten critical recognition before for films like "The Town" and…"The Town," really think about the idea of her being nominated in the same category and then defeating these actresses: Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep. One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn’t belong. You know? And given the time frame, it would have been for "The Shallows "(which was nominated for Favorite Thriller Movie and lost to Emily Blunt’s "The Girl on the Train").

Despite her mother's wishes, LaToya Ferguson is a writer living in Los Angeles. If you want to talk The WB's image campaigns circa 1999-2003, LaToya's your girl.
