‘Point Break’ Sequel Series Coming to AMC
Everett Collection

Point Break series is coming to AMC. The series was previously announced as being in development, but AMC announced the series order on Friday, September 11. It’s not a remake of the 1991 hit film starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, but a continuation made by the creators of Halt and Catch Fire and NCIS: Los Angeles.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Point Break about?

“More than three decades after the events of the original Point Break film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged, and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them,” AMC describes the Point Break series.

The 1991 film is about an FBI agent who infiltrates a group of surfers suspected of being bank robbers who execute their heists wearing masks of former U.S. Presidents. Swayze played Bodhi, with Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah. It also starred Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, and James LeGros. It was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and executive produced by James Cameron.

A remake of Point Break was made in 2015, starring Edgar Ramírez and Luke Bracey as Bodhi and Utah. The Point Break series was announced as “in development” in late 2025.

When does AMC’s Point Break series come out?

AMC aims to be in production in early 2027. No cast members have been announced, and a premiere date will be announced at a later time. There will be eight episodes in Season 1.

It will air on AMC and AMC+, with Alcon Television Group serving as lead studio and AMC Studios and StudioCanal, a Canal+ company, as co-producers. Alcon will handle global distribution outside of the U.S. and Canada.

Dave Kalstein (TreadstoneQuanticoNCIS: Los Angeles) and Christopher C. Rogers (Halt and Catch FireSugar) serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on Point Break. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will also Executive Produce, alongside Alcon Television Group head of television Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen. M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gratton are overseeing the project for StudioCanal. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong will serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook as Supervising Producers.

“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development, and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”

Said Kalstein and Rogers: “Point Break was the movie that rocked our worlds forever. It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. Point Break is more than just a movie — it’s a way of looking at the world.  We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and StudioCanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”

Point Break joins other new series and seasons planned for AMC and AMC+ in 2027 and beyond, including Thunder Road, a multi-generational racing drama produced in partnership with NASCAR and starring Dennis Quaid; the final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon; new seasons of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches and the acclaimed Silicon Valley drama The Audacity; a new season in the company’s Rise Of sports docuseries franchise, Rise of the Saints; and the recently greenlit spy drama Bannerman, produced in partnership with Netflix. Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire Season 4, Queen of the Damned, is also in the works.
