Ranking the 25 best Matt Damon characters

Matt Damon has blossomed into one of the great actors of all time. Here's our list of the best of his best.

1 of 25

25. Loki ("Dogma")

Loki (
Lions Gate Films

We kick off our list with Damon's most expensive screen time in a Kevin Smith movie. He teams with brother-from-another-mother Ben Affleck as one of the fallen angels trying to get back into Heaven. Damon's Loki is the more entertaining of the two, and we particularly like his take on the only thing more exhausting than raining down sulfur to deliver mass genocide is playing soccer.

24. Specialist Ilario ("Courage Under Fire")

Specialist Ilario (
Twentieth Century Fox

Damon's screen time was minimal but noticeable in this 1996 war drama starring Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan. However, perhaps the most memorable aspect of Damon's character was that he dropped roughly 50 pounds through an unsupervised diet to get under 140 pounds for the role. That physical and mental preparation eventually took its toll on Damon, who needed medical attention by the end of the process while also struggling to adapt to his lack of acclaim for the performance.

23. Lt. Dane Dumars ("The Rip")

Lt. Dane Dumars (
Netflix

More from Damon and Affleck. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before the two portrayed police officers in an action thriller. In this 2026 Netflix production, the format takes an intriguing twist. Perhaps Damon is more entertaining in action movies than buddy Affleck, and that feels the same with The Rip. The role is one of Damon's more underrated performances.

22. Rannulph Junuh ("The Legend of Bagger Vance")

Rannulph Junuh (
Twentieth Century Fox; Dreamworks Pictures

While the film did poorly at the box office, Junuh is a strong enough character to earn a prominent spot on this list. The mental rigors of war have messed Junuh up, but he finds solace in golf. A pure talent, with the help of the mysterious but wise caddie (played by Will Smith), Junuh has the chance to prove his worth on the course against two of the game's greats: Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen.

21. Mitch Emhoff ("Contagion")

Mitch Emhoff (
Warner Bros.

A handful of directors have become loyal to Damon. Steven Soderbergh is one of them. As we'll see, Damon usually shines even amid a star-studded cast. That's the case with Soderbergh's 2011 medical thriller, where Damon's "everyman" Mitch Emhoff, who has a natural immunity to the deadly MEV-1 virus, which took the lives of his wife and stepson, is impactful as he tries to make sense of a pandemic. All while possessing hardly any medical or scientific knowledge

20. Pt. James Francis Ryan ("Saving Private Ryan")

Pt. James Francis Ryan (
Dreamworks Pictures; Paramount Pictures

Though Damon gets very little screen time in this iconic 1998 Steven Spielberg war drama, his character drives the movie. And, in the collective minds of some moviegoers and fans of the film, the mission to save him, as the last surviving brother of four in the war, is conflicting. The point makes sense, but an entire unit was put through hell for one man. But that's why the movie is so intense and emotional, and Damon's limited screen time as Pt. Ryan is so memorable.

19. Linus Caldwell ("Ocean's" franchise)

Linus Caldwell (
Warner Bros. Pictures

One of Damon's most fun roles. A budding con man trying to break out of the shadow of his father, Bobby Caldwell, a legend in the trade. Teamed with the aforementioned Steven Soderbergh, Damon appears in all three installments of the updated Ocean's movies, but Ocean's Eleven remains his shining moment. In many ways, Linus' growth as a con man is the most entertaining aspect of the movie.

18. Gen. Leslie Groves ("Oppenheimer")

Gen. Leslie Groves (
Universal Pictures; Syncopy; Atlas Entertainment

Another ensemble moment from a Christopher Nolan film that featured Damon. Though he was not the star of the highly lauded picture, Damon's Groves was strong as the director of the Manhattan Project. He also chose J. Robert Oppenheimer to lead the lab. Even in the most modest of roles, Damon delivers.

17. Carol Burnett ("30 Rock")

Carol Burnett (
YouTube

Damon was brilliant in this recurring role as the witty airline pilot, with a highly recognizable name, and romantic interest of Tina Fey's Liz Lemon. His work spanned Seasons 4 and 5, and like Liz, he wasn't a fan of the out-of-control tattoo situation in the NBA. The relationship ultimately did not last, but Damon earned an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

10 of 25

16. Dr. Hugh Mann ("Interstellar")

Dr. Hugh Mann (
YouTube

Some argue this is his most dislikable character. Part of Christopher Nolan's cast. Mann is the primary antagonist in this 2014 sci-fi hit. Mann is brilliant, but he's also a coward who jeopardizes the mission because he's afraid of dying. Sure, we get it, but the fact that he has no morals makes Damon's fans likely to seethe when thinking of this character.

11 of 25

15. Charlie Dillon ("School Ties")

Charlie Dillon (
Paramount Pictures

Damon's first starring role is the golden boy: a bigoted, attractive scholar who struggles to live up to the demands of his wealthy, well-respected family. Dillon, though, is insecure and threatened once star quarterback David Greene (Brendan Fraser) arrives on campus. Jealous, Dillon initially befriends David until the latter's popularity begins to grow and eventually unveils a major secret of his new classmates, which also pits the two against each other in a struggle to avoid expulsion. Dillon is generally considered a horrible person to outsiders, but in its setting of 1955, it is par for the course.

14. Scott Thorson ("Behind the Candelabra")

Scott Thorson (
Jerry Weintraub Productions; HBO Films

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and aired on HBO in the United States, the movie offers a look into the later life of flamboyant pianist and entertainer Liberace and his relationship with the much younger Thorson. Soderbergh earned a prime-time Emmy, as did Michael Douglas for his role as Liberace. Damon garnered plenty of acclaim as Thorson in this dramatic interpretation of the latter's memoir, "Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace." For his die-hard movie fans, it was quite an intriguing role.

13 of 25

13. Donny ("EuroTrip")

Donny (
Dreamworks Pictures

Safe to say, this is one of the great movie cameos of all time. High school graduation parties are perfect grounds for memorable movie moments. Maybe not for Scotty (Scott Mechlowicz), who learned his girlfriend Fiona had not only broken up with him but that she'd been cheating on him with the singer (Damon) of a band that was playing the same party that night. Donny's hilarious vocals on the blistering "Scotty Doesn't Know," a song about their affair while Scotty looked on.

12. LaBoeuf ("True Grit")

LaBoeuf (
Paramount Pictures

Many veteran film critics believe this 2010 version of Charles Portis's 1968 novel is better than the original 1969 John Wayne classic. Damon plays the character made famous on screen by Glenn Campbell, and is both stoic and impactful as the dedicated Texas Ranger. Damon's supporting performance is often considered one of his best, though it may not have received enough acclaim.

15 of 25

11. Rudy Baylor ("The Rainmaker")

Rudy Baylor (
Paramount Pictures

Baylor is a celebrated literary character — in this case, courtesy of John Grisham. Damon, however, gives the underdog rookie attorney the Hollywood treatment that makes him even more worthy of audience support. He struggles to pass the bar and isn't lucky enough to land a gig with a big-time law firm. Sometimes, it takes a grinder, someone capable of succeeding based on instincts, and not just how much knowledge of the law they consume from a textbook.

16 of 25

10. Jason Bourne ("Bourne" franchise)

Jason Bourne (
Universal Pictures

As with any major motion picture star, especially leading male actors, they eventually find their way into action thrillers. Superstars tend to get a franchise, and that's the case with Damon and the Bourne franchise. His Jason Bourne roles proved Damon could succeed in action pictures, and his performances also let audiences truly feel for the character.

17 of 25

9. Mike McDermott ("Rounders")

Mike McDermott (
Miramax Films

Building on the Texas hold 'em poker craze that was just beginning to take off at the time, Rounders has become a cult favorite over the years. On the heels of Good Will Hunting, Damon stars as a law-school student who returns to the table after a brief retirement to help his pal "Worm" (Edward Norton) repay his mounting gambling debt after  his prison release. Trouble ensues, and the poker scenes are highly intense, especially when Mike sits down for a revenge match against notorious Russian mobster Teddy "KGB" (John Malkovich). This is one of Damon's most entertaining roles.

8. Sonny Vaccaro ("Air")

Sonny Vaccaro (
Amazon Studios; Warner Bros. Pictures

This Ben Affleck-directed biopic about Nike's rise to global dominance, and specifically the courting of then-budding NBA star Michael Jordan, is highly entertaining. Damon, who stars as marketing guru Sonny Vaccaro, earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. It's not easy to deliver a performance in biopic form, especially in a non-action or musical role. But Damon pulls it off rather easily, making the somewhat eccentric Vaccaro likable and easy to root for.

7. Mark Whitacre ("The Informant!")

Mark Whitacre (
Warner Bros.

More from Damon and Steven Soderbergh in this strong dark comedy biopic from 2009. This time, Damon plays Mark Whitacre, an employee of central Illinois company Archer Daniels Midland, who blows the whistle on the lysine price-fixing conspiracy from the 1990s. Damon's perfect blend of sly comedy and sincere dramatic moments is spot-on, and earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

20 of 25

6. Staff Sgt. Colin Sullivan ("The Departed")

Staff Sgt. Colin Sullivan (
Warner Bros.

Sullivan is right up there with Dr. Mann when it comes to Damon's most hated character. However, Sullivan was corrupt from the get-go, notably because famed fictional Boston mobster Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) was like a father to him as a young boy, and there was a certain need to remain loyal to him as a working adult. Sullivan truly is a rat, but we understand why.

21 of 25

5. Francois Pienaar ("Invictus")

Francois Pienaar (
Warner Bros.

With Clint Eastwood directing and Morgan Freeman and Damon in the starring roles,  Invictus  was a heavyweight production. Freeman as South African President Nelson Mandela and Damon as Pienaar, captain of the nation's rugby team, are especially memorable. The movie's true inspiration is Mandela and his ability to use his national rugby team  to help unite a fragile country in a post-apartheid world. Considering the overall acclaim for the movie and Damon's performance, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, it remains an underrated performance in the annals of his career.

22 of 25

4. Odysseus ("The Odyssey")

Odysseus (
Universal Pictures

Arguably, this is Damon's most ambitious role. While he didn't go to the questionable lengths in preparation as with Courage Under Fire, Damon cut weight while throwing himself into the role -- both physically and mentally. While this latest Christopher Nolan epic has drawn mixed reviews in the summer of 2026, Damon's performance in the title is certainly the film's highlight. Though Odysseus, the figure, could have rather easily made his way home.

23 of 25

3. Tom Ripley ("The Talented Mr. Ripley")

Tom Ripley (
Miramax Films; Mirage Enterprises; Timnick Films

Yes, Damon's Ripley character can be categorized as creepy and subtly disturbing. But the complexity and unsettling nature of the character are brilliantly brought to life through Damon's talent, which only adds to the iconic role. He received massive acclaim for the role, but did not earn an Academy Award nomination. However, he did receive a Best Actor Golden Globe for one of the most defining characters of his exceptional movie career.

24 of 25

2. Dr. Mark Watney ("The Martian")

Dr. Mark Watney (
Twentieth Century Fox

One of two Damon roles that earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Although he didn't win, he took home a Best Actor Golden Globe Award while working under Ridley Scott. In one of the most successful sci-fi movies of all time, Damon's astronaut Mark Watney is stranded on Mars following a failed mission. He's on his own, trying to survive, and takes the depth of isolation and despair to new levels. While also trying to remain hopeful. With this performance, Damon proved he can deliver a memorably impactful performance on his own.

1. Will Hunting ("Good Will Hunting")

Will Hunting (
The Weinstein Company

While Charlie Dillon officially introduced movie fans to Damon in a starring role, Will Hunting remains his most defining role for a film he -- and Affleck -- earned an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Soon-to-be 21-year-old Will is one of the smartest humans on the planet, especially as a mathematician. However, a rough upbringing that included enduring abuse from foster families has harbored trust issues that have kept him from reaching his potential. He's hot-tempered, volatile, and not a big fan of authority. He doesn't seem in any rush to give up his life as a janitor at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, drinking at the L Street Tavern and causing havoc on the streets of South Boston. In many ways, he's his own worst enemy, until he realizes that does not have to be the case.
