SINNERS Used Costumes From Marvel Studios’ Perpetually Delayed BLADE
Michael B. Jordan in Sinners. Warner Bros.

Sadly, the Marvel Studios version of Blade has hit a wall once again. Not even star Mahershal Ali seems to know what’s up. But we have actually already seen parts of it on screen this year. If you saw Ryan Coogler’s horror hit Sinners, then you saw several costumes originally designed for Blade before its cancellation. In an interview with ScreenCrush, via Variety, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian revealed that Marvel Studios sold costumes originally created for Blade to Warner Bros. for use in Sinners. Here’s what he had to say on the subject:

Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting. At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as Sinners. She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, ‘Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.’ And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price.

These costumes were mostly worn by extras in the background. Mostly in the town, and also in the twins’ jazz club. But Michael B. Jordan and the main cast had costumes designed specifically for them. It’s nice to know that all the hard work by Ruth Carter went to good use. And they certainly worked just fine in  Sinners.

Rumors persist that whatever form Blade takes in the MCU, it will no longer take place in the 1930s. We kind of hope the eventual MCU version of Blade takes place in the ’70s. After all, that’s the era when the character first appeared in Marvel Comics. In the meantime, we can see some of the work that went into Blade whenever we watch Ryan Coogler’s modern horror masterpiece.
