Stitch Head is an animated Halloween adventure that tells the story of a mad scientist’s creation, who cares for the other misfit monsters the scientist creates, protecting them from the outside world. Based on the popular children’s book series, the movie takes a spin on the classic Frankenstein story, making it accessible for children without diminishing the creepy factor. A new trailer for the movie recently dropped, and it showcases plenty of Halloween fun for spooky season.

The trailer introduces us to Stitch Head, a monster boy who assists a mad scientist with his creations. Once they’re created, he helps introduce them to the world and the other monsters, reading them bedtime stories and, according to the trailer‘s YouTube description, he “is tasked with protecting the professor’s other wildly inventive creations from the suspicious townspeople of Grubber Nubbin.” However, when he is kidnapped by a greedy circus ringmaster, it’s up to the other creations to rescue him.
The visual design of the movie is perfect for Halloween, featuring odd character designs that are still strangely charming. Stitch Head himself has an unsettling appearance with his (of course) stitched-together head, but he also has an adorable smile and a welcoming demeanor, which is reminiscent of Tim Burton or Laika movies that manage to be creepy and appealing at the same time. His mission to protect the other creations from the town’s prejudices carries the Frankenstein theme of the misfit who can’t fit in because the world is afraid of him, which is a theme that even children can relate to.
It also looks like it will be a fine movie for Halloween – and it’s fitting, given that Guillermo Del Toro is releasing his own Frankenstein adaptation this Halloween. We will have two movies that are inspired by the classic story, one for adults and one for kids. The whole family can discuss the story’s lasting impact.
In an era where many animated movies have a similar look and feel, Stitch Head could be exactly what audiences are looking for. It can remind Hollywood that animated movies can be creepy and that kids can handle some frights. If you enjoy creepy animated movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas or Coraline, this might be worth checking out. Plus, it’s inspired by Frankenstein, one of the most classic horror stories of all time, and that alone should make it worthwhile.
