The 25 best 'Modern Family' episodes

For 11 seasons, Modern Family drew consistent laughs as one of the most innovative and original comedies of all time. "Breaking the fourth wall," this massively popular sitcom endearingly delved into adoption, the LGBTQ+ community, and growing up in a blended family. With that in mind, we look at 25 of the best episodes of Modern Family.

Pilot (2009)

Pilot (2009)
20th Century Fox

We are introduced to Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), married to his second wife, the much-younger, voluptuous, and often emotional Gloria (Sofia Vergara), who also has a young son, Manny. Jay has two adult children. Claire (Julie Bowen) is a high-strung, unhinged mom of three (Haley, Alex, and Luke) and married to quirky, somewhat dim, but harmless real estate agent Phil. Her uptight lawyer brother, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), is in a same-sex relationship with the outgoing Cam (Eric Stonestreet). Mitchell and Cam just adopted a baby girl, Lily, from Vietnam — whom the rest of the family does not know about. Let the hilarity ensue

"Run for Your Wife" (Season 1, 2009)

"Run for Your Wife" (Season 1, 2009)
20th Century Fox

One of the more memorable moments in Modern Family history came when Mitchell and Cam locked baby Lily in the car after embarrassing themselves when unsuccessfully trying to impress an Asian pediatrician. Trying to get Lily out of the car is one of Stonestreet's great efforts as Cam. Equally hilarious is Haley (Sarah Hyland) running over dad Phil (Ty Burrell) during her driver's exam test.

"Fizbo" (Season 1, 2009)

"Fizbo" (Season 1, 2009)
20th Century Fox

It's the first time we meet Fizbo, Cam's alter-ego clown, who decides to show up at Luke's (Nolan Gould) birthday party. Phil is not a fan of clowns, but Fizbo, who also happens to be a tough guy who's afraid of scorpions, is still a hit. However, Claire's comb sheaths are not, and ultimately the reason for Luke's trip to the emergency room after a crossbow incident sends the party into chaos.

"Moon Landing" (Season 1, 2010)

"Moon Landing" (Season 1, 2010)
20th Century Fox

One of the funniest moments in the annals of the show came early on when Cam and Jay get together to play racquetball. Jay is uncomfortable with spending time in the locker room with Cam, and things get uneasy when their "butts pressed against each other." At least it was not a "splashdown," Cam notes in attempting to comfort Jay.

"My Funky Valentine" (Season 1, 2010)

"My Funky Valentine" (Season 1, 2010)
20th Century Fox

It's Valentine's Day and time to meet Clive Bixby, Phil's alter-ego. Clive makes an appearance as Phil and Claire look to spice things up for the night. Claire (or Julianna, as she's going by) endures a slight wardrobe malfunction. At the same time, Jay is heckled by famed comedian David Brenner. Not to be outdone, Mitchell and Cam, in their usual dramatic fashion, try to help a love-starved Manny (Rico Rodriguez) win over a girl.

"The Kiss" (Season 2, 2010)

"The Kiss" (Season 2, 2010)
20th Century Fox

Mitchell is having trouble displaying his affection for Cam in public, leading the couple to list when it is appropriate or not to kiss in public. At the same time, Alex (Ariel Winter) endures a bumpy ride toward her first kiss. Not to be outdone, Phil is having a hard time with a printer owned by Jay, who Gloria has played while she prepares a meal amid the spirit of her dead grandmother. As we learn, the Pritchett men all have trouble showing affection, which results in several laughs.

"Earthquake" (Season 2, 2010)

"Earthquake" (Season 2, 2010)
Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic/Getty Images

An earthquake rocks the three families. Locked in a bathroom with a plumber, Claire learns more about herself than she might want to admit. It's also the first appearance on this list of Pepper Saltzman (Nathan Lane), Mitchell and Cam's eccentric and flamboyant friend known for lavishly themed parties and brunches. Jay and Manny also delve into a discussion about heaven and hell while on the golf course.

"Strangers on the Treadmill" (Season 2, 2010)

"Strangers on the Treadmill" (Season 2, 2010)
20th Century Fox

Modern Family has been known to pay tribute to some great movies or directors. In this case, it's Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train. While on the treadmill, Mitchell and Claire decide to handle each other's problems. Claire tells Cam to lose the bike shorts, and Mitchell keeps Phil from embarrassing himself at a realtor at SCARB (Southern California Annual Realtors Banquet). Of course, neither plan works out as they intended, much like Gloria's attempt to get Jay to attend an employee's daughter's quinceanera.

"Halloween" (Season 2, 2010)

"Halloween" (Season 2, 2010)
20th Century Fox

The annual Modern Family Halloween episodes were among the most anticipated each season. But the first of its kind is still the best. Mitchell is excited to dress up as Spider-Man at his new job, only to see it backfire. (Jesse Tyler Ferguson received an Emmy nomination for this performance.) Claire disapproves of Haley's costume choices, especially her Mother Teresa take. The mocking of Gloria's accent is also quite comical.

"Caught in the Act" (Season 2, 2011)

"Caught in the Act" (Season 2, 2011)
20th Century Fox

The Dunphy kids surprise Phil and Claire with breakfast in bed for their anniversary, only to find the couple getting busy under the sheets. While Haley and Alex are traumatized, their mom and dad are even more rattled. Cam and Mitchell try to get in good with the owner of a hot new restaurant, but, of course, they manage to hilariously mess that up.

"The Musical Man" (Season 2, 2011)

"The Musical Man" (Season 2, 2011)
20th Century Fox

One last gem from the sensational Season 2, and this time, Cam is the interim director of the play at Manny and Luke's school. To no surprise, Cam goes overboard and becomes hilariously overbearing. At the same time, Jay aims to continue his prank-based relationship with his brother, Donnie (Jonathan Banks), and Phil's attempt to include his whole family in a new realtor ad leaves them in a more risque light.

12 of 25

"Treehouse" (Season 3, 2011)

"Treehouse" (Season 3, 2011)
20th Century Fox

Phil attempts to build Luke (Nolan Gould) a treehouse, which is quite a comedic spectacle. However, the highlight of this episode is Cam trying to prove to Mitchell that he can pick up a woman, Katie (Leslie Mann) — "Wham bam, thank you, Cam." Manny teaches Jay how to salsa dance to make Gloria happy. Also, Claire creatively helps Haley with her college application by giving her an example of overcoming hardship. Like the Kevin Hart cameo, too.

"Little Bo Bleep" (Season 3, 2012)

"Little Bo Bleep" (Season 3, 2012)
20th Century Fox

While it's probably not proper to showcase child cursing, watching Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) fancy the "F-word" is entertaining and made more funny by Cam and Mitchell's reaction and handling of the matter. Perhaps even more hysterical is Lily's light-up flower girl dress for an upcoming wedding. Claire, meanwhile, has a rough time at her town council debate vs. Duane Bailey (David Cross).

"Virgin Territory" (Season 3, 2012)

"Virgin Territory" (Season 3, 2012)
20th Century Fox

The airing of some past lies over brunch results in Jay finding out he never recorded a hole-in-one he often boasted about. It also indirectly led to Phil finding out that Haley is no longer a virgin, a joyride for Luke and Manny, and the unveiling of Claire's penchant for the shooting range as a means to relieve stress. Oh yeah, and who can forget Cam's quest to find a piece of Tupperware he lent the Dunphys?

"Baby on Board" (Season 3, 2012)

"Baby on Board" (Season 3, 2012)
20th Century Fox

In the Season 3 finale, Mitchell and Cam are set to adopt a new baby from a Latino family and take Gloria (who unveils some interesting news of her own) for translation help. However, they must miss Lily's dance recital and find themselves amid a classic telenovela. Later in the day, Alex is off to the prom with a friend many believe is gay, and Haley tells her parents she and Dylan (Reid Ewing) are moving in together after graduation. Perhaps one of the most endearing moments of the series comes when Jay shares the stage with a dancing Lily.

"Schooled" (Season 4, 2012)

"Schooled" (Season 4, 2012)
20th Century Fox

School is in session during the second episode of the fourth season. Haley leaves for college, while Lily's first day of kindergarten starts a little rocky (Mitchell and Cam don't help) but gets better with her new friend Conor. Jay and Gloria don't take their baby class as seriously as Manny would like, but in the end, lessons are learned. Let's not forget the book "PHIL'S-OSOPHY."

17 of 25

"Yard Sale" (Season 4, 2012)

"Yard Sale" (Season 4, 2012)
20th Century Fox

Jay and Gloria are holding a yard sale for charity. Manny and Luke are curious about a trunk Gloria is secretive about (meet Uncle Grumpy). Meanwhile, Mitchell is leery about selling a slimmed-down Cam's "fat" jeans, and Phil has a little mishap while riding a motorcycle. This is perhaps one of the most well-written episodes of the show's run, particularly for Phil, Cam, and Mitchell.

18 of 25

"Arrested" (Season 4, 2012)

"Arrested" (Season 4, 2012)
20th Century Fox

Haley is arrested for underage drinking at college, and she is kicked out of school. Meanwhile, Jay's ex-wife, DeDe (Shelley Long), shows up for what turns out to be a rather cordial visit. On the other hand, Cam has trouble watching after Luke, Alex, and Lily. It's a perfect example of the overall dynamic of the family.

19 of 25

"Fulgencio" (Season 4, 2013)

"Fulgencio" (Season 4, 2013)
20th Century Fox

Modern Family pays homage to The Godfather for the christening of baby Joe (or Fulgencio, according to Gloria's mother). Godfather Phil settles issues for himself, Haley, Alex, and Luke, a la Michael Corleone, when he served the same role at his nephew's baptism in the classic film. It's one of the funniest sequences in the history of the show.

"Las Vegas" (Season 5, 2014)

"Las Vegas" (Season 5, 2014)
20th Century Fox

With the kids at home, the adults will roam. In Las Vegas, that is. And in true Hollywood fashion, there is a series of misunderstandings. Whether we're taking butler dogs, male-revue dancers, overzealous ex-boyfriends, or failed attempts at magician glory, this episode is over the top. Then again, it's Vegas, so what else would we expect?

"The Wedding: Part I" (Season 4, 2014)

"The Wedding: Part I" (Season 4, 2014)
20th Century Fox

One of the more underrated episodes in the show's history. It's Cam and Mitchell's wedding day, and plenty goes wrong with Pepper in charge. Wildfires in the area are forced to move up the wedding time, but Claire and Luke are stuck in the middle of a lake, and Lily goes for a ride while trying to retrieve Cam's tuxedo from the dry cleaners. At least Phil and Alex get a little bonding time in a department store.

"The Wedding: Part II" (Season 5, 2014)

Thanks to the wildfires, Mitchell and Cam's wedding needs to be a rush job. However, the officiant pal Sal (Elizabeth Banks) has gone into labor. No problem. Online-registered minister Phil steps in, and guests are transported via school bus. There's a butterfly attack in Pepper's car, Claire's constant dress blunders, and a once-reluctant Jay saving the day to give Mitchell and Cam a wedding of their dreams.

"Connection Lost" (Season 6, 2015)

"Connection Lost" (Season 6, 2015)
20th Century Fox

Perhaps the most innovative and ingenious Modern Family episode during its run is told entirely through the perspective of Claire's laptop, via FaceTime, iMessage, and iCloud, as she tries to track down Haley while waiting for her from Chicago. While checking out Luke's disastrous Mohawk or Mitchell's suave "Yentl" hat, Claire — and the rest of the family — believe Haley is pregnant and ran away to get married to Andy (Adam DeVine). However, Haley is closer to home than they think.

"The Alliance" (Season 8, 2016)

"The Alliance" (Season 8, 2016)
20th Century Fox

Gloria, Cam, and Phil form an alliance as they continue to become frustrated with their respective significant others. There is plenty of funny moments, particularly Phil's run-in with a shock collar. While Jay, Claire, and Mitchell think they got their way in planning the family's next trip, their spouses end up getting the holiday to Italy they were all hoping for.

"A Year of Birthdays" (Season 10, 2019)

"A Year of Birthdays" (Season 10, 2019)
20th Century Fox

While some believe the overall Modern Family product waned in the later years, the Season 10 finale showed the comedy still had legs. The episode looks at each of the main character's birthdays over a year. Whether a hilarious roast of Jay, Mitchell's request to spend his birthday alone, Manny's hilarious yet heartbreaking talent-show celebration, or culminating with the birth of Haley's twins, it's another example of quality time spent with America's most beloved modern family.

Yankees receive positive Aaron Judge update

The New York Yankees have recently been slumping, but they may be getting a boost soon. Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge took batting practice Sunday at the team's minor league complex in Tampa Bay, via Erik Boland of Newsday. The 33-year-old slugger is now expected to return to New York's lineup in Tuesday's road game against the Texas Rangers. The Yankees placed Judge on the 10-day injured list on July 27 because of a flexor strain in his right elbow. He suffered the injury during a 5-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on July 22 when throwing a ball from the outfield. New York manager Aaron Boone indicated the injury isn't a long-term concern, but they'll start Judge at designated hitter as a precaution. "No acute injury to the UCL. Overall, that's the good news," the manager said July 27, via MLB.com's Bill Ladson. "With those first few days coming off the IL, it's probably DH mode. Then he'll start throwing ... and hopefully, get back to the outfield shortly thereafter." Still, that's better than no Judge, especially for a team that's losing ground in the American League East race. Entering Sunday, New York (60-51) was third in the division behind the Boston Red Sox (62-51) and the Blue Jays (65-47). The Yankees had also dropped six of their past 10 games, including a shocking 13-12 home loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday. Judge was producing stellar numbers before the injury. In 377 at-bats in 103 games, the two-time AL MVP slashed .342/.449/.711 with 37 home runs. Judge returning at full power would help the Yankees rediscover their groove in the second half of the season.

Michael Hage’s Dominance Clear at World Juniors Showcase

The World Junior Showcase showed the dominance of multiple Montreal Canadiens prospects this past week. After discussing Koivu’s play in the mini tournament earlier today, it is now time for a discussion on the 21st overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, Michael Hage. Much like his Finnish counterpart, the Canadian forward Hage stood out from his teammates throughout the showcase. Hage, who is arguably a top 3 prospect within the Montreal Canadiens pipeline, put on a show that should help him secure a role within Canada’s 2026 World Juniors team. The fact that he proved to be one of the best players for Canada this past week shows that not even getting an invite to the team’s final selection camp, despite a very strong freshman season at the University of Michigan, seemed silly, as even last year, he likely should have had a shot at making the team. Now that he managed to score a goal in all 4 games that he played for Canada at the World Juniors Showcase, there is almost no way that Canada can leave him off the roster. One of the most memorable moments throughout the whole tournament for Hage was definitely when he was in a scrum, mixing it up with his former Canadiens Development camp roommate, Aatos Koivu, as previously mentioned in my article from earlier today. Another amazing moment in that game was Hage’s goal, where he completely deked around the Finland goalie to put the puck in the net. It will be interesting to see where in the Canada lineup Hage will land, as a lot of notable names such as Michael Misa, Beckett Sennecke, and Tij Iginla did not play at the showcase. The good news is that the first two names may end up playing in the NHL, allowing a spot higher in the lineup for Hage. Another thing that will work well in Hage’s favour is that he is very versatile and can play on the wing or at centre for Canada. His coach even praised his “hard skills” for Canada during those four games he played. After watching Hage’s play over the last year, one thing is clear: he could be a play driver on whatever line he plays on for Canada. His game also seems like it will translate well at the pro level. Many may say that Hage must play a top 6 role for Canada, but the fact that he can play an aggressive style and has a strong defensive game could mean that he is also able to play in a bottom-six role if need be. The truth is it would be unlikely he would have to be on the bottom 6, but if the guys mentioned above aren’t in the NHL and are instead on the team, there is a chance that it could happen. This upcoming season with the Michigan Wolverines should be a big one where Hage could find his way in the Hobey Baker conversation if he improves on his 13 goals and 34 points in 33 games. The first half of the season will be telling for his place with Hockey Canada, whereas the 2nd half could also help him earn some time at the pro level. The way Hage has played since being drafted, it feels more like it’s more about when he’ll play for the Canadiens in a regular-season game, rather than if he will. Will Hage prove that he’s ready to play at the pro level this year at Michigan?

Steelers In Town Scouting Elite Top Quarterback Prospect For 2026 NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of excitement heading into the 2025 season with Aaron Rodgers in town, along with many other new faces. The team has Super Bowl expectations, but the fan base is still craving a true franchise quarterback to lead them for years to come. While rookie Will Howard has looked promising in training camp, he is not expected to be the long-term answer at quarterback. After the 2025 season concludes, the Steelers will be hosting the 2026 NFL Draft. Many pundits believe this event will be where the Steelers finally find their franchise quarterback, a player who can bring stability and success to the position. The anticipation is high, and the organization is clearly preparing to make a big move. On Monday, it was reported by Brad Denny, who provides excellent coverage of Arizona State football, that the Steelers have sent scouts to evaluate their prospects. Among those they are watching closely is the top quarterback prospect Sam Leavitt, indicating the team’s serious interest in securing a future star through the draft. In November of 2022, the Sun Devils hired Head Coach Kenny Dillingham, who has quickly transformed the team. What was once considered a struggling program has now become an exciting and competitive squad, with serious potential to contend for a national title heading into the 2025 season. Naturally, Steelers fans immediately think of Leavitt when they hear about scouts visiting, but the Sun Devils’ roster is loaded with NFL talent beyond just their star quarterback. It’s very possible the Steelers’ interest extends to other promising players as well. Chris Karpman gave more details about the amount of NFL scouts at the ASU practice on Monday. "There are 11 NFL scouts representing 10 teams at today’s ASU practice, the most at any practice since Dillingham became head coach," Karpman said on social media. It’s certainly interesting, but not surprising, to hear that the Steelers had scouts in attendance at the ASU practice. Sheldon White, the Steelers’ Director of Pro Scouting, is clearly involved in deciding who the organization will scout, when, and why. It’s no secret that the Steelers are in desperate need of a true franchise quarterback. Many believe the 2026 NFL Draft will be Pittsburgh’s biggest opportunity to find that quarterback since their attempt with Kenny Pickett in 2022. That experiment didn’t go as planned, and now, with 12 expected draft picks in a quarterback class that could be loaded with talent, the Steelers are getting an early look. They’ve begun scouting at ASU, keeping a close eye on potential prospects. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that former Steelers legend Hines Ward is still the wide receivers coach at ASU. His presence adds another layer of connection to the reports of Steelers scouts attending ASU practices, suggesting strong ties and serious interest in the program and its players. Steelers' Will Howard Has Looked Good In Training Camp Early reports out of camp are that sixth-round pick Howard has done a solid job with the opportunities he’s been given. The issue for Howard is that the Steelers are expected to draft a top quarterback prospect. Making such a big investment in a promising player will make it even harder for Howard to steal the starting job. Naturally, when more resources are tied up in a higher-end prospect, the team will do more to get the most out of that player. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible for Howard, but he will need to continue to thrive if he wants any chance to compete for the starting job after Rodgers.

NBA Notes: Raptors, Immanuel Quickley, Jordan Clarkson, Knicks, Sixers, Tyrese Maxey

A five-year deal completed nearly a year ago is still shaping the way NBA teams and agents are approaching restricted free agency. According to ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks, the contract that Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley signed last July has become a major sticking point. The deal, which includes $162.5 million in guaranteed money and another $12.5 million in incentives, averages $32.5 million per season and could reach $35 million annually. “The Immanuel Quickley contract has totally screwed up restricted free agency,” Marks said during an appearance on ESPN’s YouTube channel. “Because that’s where agents are looking at like the benchmark. Certainly, [Bulls guard] Josh Giddey’s like, ‘I want that contract.’ That number has screwed up a lot of things.” Marks said agents are citing Quickley’s deal in negotiations for other young guards with similar production and upside, but teams haven’t been willing to match the price tag. “I don’t think Toronto got enough heat for that number,” he added. “Because Immanuel Quickley is not a $32, $33 million guy.” Clarkson Still a Wild Card for Knicks The Knicks are hoping Jordan Clarkson provides a spark off the bench, but there is uncertainty about what exactly he brings at this stage of his career. As one Western Conference scout told The New York Post’s Stefan Bondy, Clarkson hasn’t played meaningful basketball in quite a while and remains a bit of a mystery heading into the 2025–26 season. Still, one Knicks source believes the veteran scorer is “exactly what we needed,” and sees him as a strong fit off the bench. A veteran coach who spoke with Bondy sees upside but also concerns. “High-level shooter. Good going right,” the coach said. “Wild-card-type player. Throw him out there and see if he can get hot. But there’s not much else from a production standpoint. And it’s ugly on defense.” Maxey Gives Back in Philly Tyrese Maxey continues to make an impact beyond the court. The 76ers guard hosted a free youth basketball camp over the weekend and donated $60,000 through his foundation, per The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey. Maxey’s community efforts have become a regular part of his offseason work in the Philadelphia area. More NBA News Rumors
