'The Batman 2' to begin filming next year

Even as James Gunn got DC Studios' new, revamped superhero universe up and running with 'Superman', he's made it clear director Matt Reeves will have carte blanche to do his own thing with the Batman movies. Some have been skeptical about this, believing somebody with sway, be it Gunn or Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav, wouldn't want a Batman film series existing outside DC Studios. Since a lot of time has passed since 'The Batman' came out in 2022 with little new news, additional skepticism abounded, even with Gunn asserting that such breaks were fairly commonplace in the world of sequels.

As Gunn posted on Threads:

To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.

Well, Gunn and Warner Bros. weren't bluffing. This June, reports came out that said Reeves had completed his script for 'The Batman 2.' Now, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that there is a formal plan for 'The Batman 2' to start shooting in the spring of 2026, with the plan for a release in October 2027.

Certainly nothing is imminent, but Reeves is indeed getting to continue his Batman series outside of Gunn's DC Universe.
