It was bound to happen. Stitch and his compatriot in arms Lilo were smashing the box office, but the live-action remake of "How to Train Your Dragon" loomed. Some were skeptical about this latest live-action remake of an animated movie. The original only came out 15 years ago, with the most-recent sequel coming out in 2019. Also, based on the trailer and the reviews, the feeling was that "How to Train Your Dragon" was close to just a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Turns out people didn't care, especially young people. "How to Train Your Dragon" exceeded expectations to make a whopping $83.7 million domestically.
"How to Train Your Dragon" grabbed the IMAX screens and tapped into Zoomer nostalgia, which is interesting because the Zoomers have never been asked to let go of their childhood so to what end have they earned the right to nostalgia, but we digress. All in all, the film made $197.8 million worldwide, a strong start for the movie that is going to ensure these live-action remakes will continue apace. To that end, the sequel is already slated for 2027.
However, everybody's All-American Stitch did not go down without a fight. Even with "HtTYD" catering to the same audience, "Lilo & Stitch" finished second, reeling in $15.5 million domestically and $31.1 internationally. The movie is now up to $858.4 million worldwide, so $1 billion is possible if there are some legs left in it.
In terms of what was out there for adults, the new A24 rom-com "Materialists" opened well for an adult rom-com. It made $12 million domestically. That's strong for this particular film space, but reviews have just been so-so. This is Celine Song's follow-up to her very good movie "Past Lives," Pedro Pascal is in it, and so is Chris Evans doing something that isn't playing a superhero or being in a garbage action movie. On the other hand, Song decided to tie one hand behind her back by casting Dakota Johnson, who is fundamentally not a good actor.
"The Final Reckoning" fell to fourth domestically and has now crossed $500 million worldwide, though for a movie that with a reported $400 million budget, that's not ideal. "Ballerina" is appearing to be a misfire, as its second weekend box office fell 62-percent and dropped to fifth. It has now made its budget back ($90 million) worldwide, but it's surely nixed the idea of future "John Wick" spinoffs.
